I sent in an email with a pitch relating to China. Using the just-started demolition of a 20,000-room Covid quarantine hospital that only got used for two weeks as an argument against the Zombie idea of China's long-term planning. Please do have a look, I'm looking forward to your thoughts!

She writes great articles like this one, which breaks down some of the biggest myths about Chinese healthcare:

I wrote about the Chinese uncle who followed IShowSpeed across China. His name is Jiang Ge from Rongchang near Chongqing. A local internet celebrity who has consistently worked to promote his hometown, support local farmers, and do charity work.

The protest started at 2pm - with speakers including MPs and dissidents - police cleared the protest at 4pm with threats of arrest if people didn't leave. Protesters blocked roads outside old Royal Mint for at least an hour. At least two arrests and two people fainted/collapsed.
09.02.2025 17:52 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Followed by a second arrest.
09.02.2025 17:48 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This was followed by protesters trying to block the police van driving off and chants to let the protester go - there was a lot of back and forth shoving and at least one protesters thrown to the ground by police.
09.02.2025 17:48 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Protesters occupied the streets around the embassy blocking off traffic. Police warned that if people didn't leave the street there would be arrests but protesters remained. There were two arrests - here's a video of the first.
09.02.2025 17:46 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0A yellow and black (colours of Hong Kong's protest movement) umbrella (symbol of the 2014 and 2019 protests) with the traditional Chinese characters for fearless.
09.02.2025 17:42 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0There were almost 30 groups involved in organising with Hong Kongers, Tibetan, Uyghur, Chinese, Taiwanese and more turning up. However, the overwhelming majority of protesters were Hong Kongers - lots of black protest gear, umbrellas, masks, and flags. Reminiscent of protests in Hong Kong.
09.02.2025 17:39 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Photos from the large protest at old Royal Mint yesterday, the proposed site of the new Chinese Embassy in London. Well over a thousand protesters turned up opposing the move.
09.02.2025 17:36 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0There were two arrests I saw and a lot of shoving as protesters tried to stop the police van with arrested protesters drive away. Separately, two people fainted/collapsed and ambulances called for them.
08.02.2025 19:13 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Was quite large, roads including tower bridge were blocked by protesters and there were at least two arrests.
08.02.2025 18:33 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0My latest for @thepienews.bsky.social translating and summarising a White Paper on Chinese overseas students' experiences. Includes lots of useful data and provides an important Chinese student perspective on struggles with English language and academic requirements.

19.12.2024 13:32 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Screenshot of a tweet by The Times. It has a picture of the Principal of QMUL with the Chinese vice-minister for education and the UK minister for skills. And a lead that questions the wisdom of setting up that meeting while there are concerns about Bejing and security
๐ฅฒ so proud of our institution, so proud.
The Principal always makes sure we hit the headlines in such hopeful ways. Good thing he made his office run this entire vanity conference to be the conduit between the minister and Chinese vice-minister, ambassador, and AI investors.
They had the private meeting at Queen Mary, University of London before both participating in the China-UK Universities Roundtable which was also attended by heads of Chinese + UK universities as well as the Chinese ambassador to the UK Zheng Zeguang.

While numerous in-depth stories in China are produced every year, genuine investigative journalism remains rare. This is why GIJN's Editorโs Picks have pivoted from featuring investigative reporting โin Chinaโ to โabout China."
