🧭 The bottom line? Conservation trends come and go, but lasting change depends on sustained public, civic, and international pressure over the long term. This is especially important for protecting forests when political will wanes, as in the Brazilian Amazon in the late 2010s.

Our approach spotlighted less tangible drivers of forest protection that are vital for generating political will but often more difficult to evaluate than discrete policy interventions:
🗣️ Civil society advocacy
🌍 International diplomacy
📢 Public awareness

‼️ We find political will and law enforcement were by far the most critical factors in both regions.

But how does political will emerge?

Our new study, led by Joss Lyons-White, @spencerthink.bsky.social, & myself in Conservation Letters, asked 36 experts in forest conservation across the Brazilian Amazon & Indonesia what factors have mattered most for protecting forests in these countries

Because the world needs some angry people to push back on everyone else’s bull**** so that others in the future don’t have to deal with it.

So yes - I pledge allegiance to angry women. 🫡

But you know what. Younger students - women, men, people from less privileged backgrounds all keep coming to me for support and we have established a place where they can flourish.

This is exactly the tightrope that women face - tone policing by men who get away with whatever tone they want. And this is so much worse in the UK academy where people dress up their insults in fancy language.

But you know what - when peers that are threatened by my success complain about my tone being aggressive and unprofessional it makes me even angrier.

You know why? Bc I, like many other women have been through all sorts of shit during my life, including multiple events of psychological abuse, bullying, and misogyny which all amount to people trying to control me.

Walked past this sign today at Oxford, which spoke to me. Yes, I am angry. Really baseline angry when it comes to all things academia and “acceptable behaviour”.
