Is there a public defender shortage in Oregon, or is there a
'work stoppage' as the Multnomah County DA claims?
District Attorney Nathan Vasquez claimed last month that instead of a public defender shortage, the crisis of unrepresented defendants is due to a "work stoppage."

DA dismisses more than 600 criminal cases over lack of defense attorneys
Updated: Feb. 19, 2026, 3:10 p.m. | Published: Feb. 19, 2026, 3:09 p.m. Oregonian

Multnomah County prosecutors have dismissed more than 600 criminal cases in response to a recent Oregon Supreme Court ruling that set clear timelines for people to get court-appointed lawyers.

Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez told lawmakers that prosecutors in his office reviewed an estimated 772 cases and so far have
dismissed 623.

I remember Multnomah DA Nathan Vasquez went on FOX12 in 2024, lying to Portland voters that then Multnomah County DA Mike Schmidt (restorative justice advocate) was lying about Oregon’s Public Defender deficit.

Now Vasquez is dismissing cases because of the very real Oregon Public Defender deficit.

10th Circuit orders lawyer to pay $1,000 for faulty AI citations The Denver-based federal appeals court ordered a lawyer on Monday to pay $1,000 to the opposing side for submitting a legal filing with fake case citations generated by artificial intelligence.

Lawyers who use AI are committing malpractice. If you can't do legal research on your own, you're in the wrong line of work.

In my 5+ years covering this court, I’ve never seen that disclaimer. Looking through past decisions, there were 3 from 2017-2018 that included this language. Twice, cases were reassigned when Justice Allison Eid got confirmed to the 10th Circuit. It’s unclear what happened the third time. (2/5)

The 10th Circuit is notoriously hostile to en banc (all judges') review of cases. However, they just granted an en banc request to consider how trial judges should resentence probation violators. Is the 10th Circuit an outlier among everybody else?
