Davant la defensa de la preservació de símbols feixistes o colonials sota el pretext de «no esborrar la història», la iconoclàstia popular i els (anti)monuments subversius reclamen el seu lloc per a les lluites anticapitalistes, antipatriarcals i antiimperialistes.
L'escassetat de teories radicals sobre els monuments ha transformat la discussió sobre la seva conservació, resignificació i destrucció en una batalla ideològica.
Els monuments són la materialització de les idees dominants i tenen la seva raó de ser en el poder econòmic. On l'ordre colonial i capitalista segueix intacte, de la mateixa manera que els seus conglomerats empresarials i oligarquies estatals, les places continuen dominades pels «grans homes».
