San Antonio, Texas is home to 1.4 million residents and is known as a sanctuary city in the US. Demographically the city is known as a majority-minority city, serving a 65% Hispanic population.
“It is on you.” said Texas State Rep. Ray Lopez in his final statement.
This Brewing Conversation event hosted by St. Mary’s University Office of Community Engagement was attended by approximately 40 members of the campus community.
A second session will be hosted later this afternoon.
“If I had the ability, I would stop it in its tracks. It’s a detention center. What input did the commmunity have? None.” said Representative Ray Lopez in response to an audience members question about a proposed ICE processing center in San Antonio, Texas.
“If you are lucky to have your vocation and advocation be the same thing, you are the luckiest person in the world.” said Ray Lopez Texas State Rep in response to the same topic.
Topic of discussion shifted to impacts students can make to drive change.
“Expand your network with your peers and with outside groups.” said Donovon Rodriguez, candidate for Texas State Rep. Dist. 125 currently serving as Chief of Staff for Texas State Rep. Ray Lopez
“This room is ready, willing and able.” said Representative Ray Lopez as he responded to additional questions and shared anecdotes regarding education and the Pre-K SA program.
According to US Census Bureau, 84.6% of San Antonio residents have earned a high school degree or higher.
Polarization between people, we’ve never been more polarized as a society. It’s a cause for concern, a negative thing growing more and more in society.” said Jonah Hill, 19, first year political science student at St. Mary’s University as a response to challenges facing the community.
“Leave some sort of legacy. I had fourteen grandchildren. I have a vested interest in that community.” said Representative Lopez in response to the event organizers question, “what does it mean to represent this district and what you wish people understood about the community?”
“We advocate for better communities, pensions, worker protections” said Chief of Staff Donovan Rodriguez regarding the work achieved in Austin.
“My opinion is always correct to me but may not always be correct to you” said State Representative Ray Lopez. “It’s not my stage, it’s your stage.”
State Rep. Ray Lopez previously served as a NISD school board member in 1991, prior to serving as a state representative.
This is the representative’s final term and he is not seeking reelection.
