She was right.

I did this on my latest manuscript.

And then my main character said, "No, this isn't what happened. The truth is much worse."

Many non-professional writers believe this is "better" because it sounds emaily. It has nothing to with conveying meaning. It's "Thank you for your attention to this matter."

It also doesn't work, because these tools replicate the characteristics of EmailSpeak -- they don't cut through it to make a point more clearly. My students who use Grammarly to "improve" their writing end up with convoluted jargony trash that obscures what they're actually trying to say.
