"The Sickle Hour is a short tabletop game that returns to a theme I've explored before - the interesting stuff that occurs when fairyland brushes with the mundane world in mundane ways." - @jmstar.bsky.social, inspired by reading about twins.

Got a good view of Fiasco by @jmstar.bsky.social from @bullypulpithq.bsky.social Student certainly sold the class on this game, in terms of interest, with several coming to my office hours to check it out.

This game does a really interesting thing - there's a sort of Heisenbergian element where both twins potentially have cool elf superpowers right up to the moment when one of them actually *uses* them - and then the other doesn't, and never will. At the table, there's a dreadful player-level tension!

I like that game a lot, what did you change?

The ENnies shouldn't do it, either. There are all kinds of ways to clear some shelf space that don't involve a clear ethical lapse.

It kills me, because YOUR game about clowns isn't going to be anything like the seven existing clown games I could rattle off. Knowing about prior art can be useful when you are ready for it, but until you are it is just demoralizing pedantry.

You are seeking the 1981 Erin Moran and Lisa Whelchel vehicle "Twirl".

Also some of it is Liechtenauer being poetic and deliberately obtuse, so who knows!

That's OK, I will get it vetted by a native speaker before I get too deep into it. Some of it is a mash of High Middle and Google translate.

A snippet of a character sheet showing off extramural skills yu can learn: Gambling, astronomy, horse trading, drinking, peacocking, dancing, arithmetic, fornicating, black magic, begging, terrorizing, grave digging, geometry, poetry, blasphemy, music, Middle High German, robbery, poaching, and long walks.

Pretty happy with this list of skills you can pick up in my game set during the Hundred Years' War.

No accompanying design document. No nothing, just ... two card backs and a game title.

Two card mockups for a game I don't remember. Both have 19th century art. One is labeled PLATFORM JENNY and the other is labeled STICKS AND SWORDS.

I had a year-long interruption and now, going back through my design files, I'm uncovering gems I don't recall at all. Here's a game titled "Metropolitan" and this is it, this is all you get. Of course it was going to be card based.

Four character relationship map demonstrating opposed/incongruent motivations, in a compact one page package.

Four character relationship map demonstrating opposed/incongruent motivations, in a compact one page package.

Here's one from my upcoming collection, Nine Space Games. With four characters it is easy to have separate motivations where that makes sense (Cricket Pine/Noris). Also gets a paragraph explaining the situation. Each of these characters has their own page of info about themselves and the others.

A relationship map that looks sort of like a color wheel; there are four main groups that each overlap. So "Satanists" overlap with "Dirtbags" and the overlap is "violent". Nine characters fall within this three by three grid.

Here's a nine-person relationship map that gets rid of direct lines of affinity and replaces them with amorphous but evocative groupings. Everything you need to know about Bunny Karpinski is laid out - they have connections to the Satanists and the dirtbags and are a violent motorcycle gang boss.

I think there's a difference between a growing, evolving r-map that responds to changing circumstances and what I'm doing in my examples, which is establishing a baseline that - given the nature of the games these are for - is unlikely to change much. So they can be pretty tight.

14.02.2026 16:25 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I agree. I'd pair this with character information cards or sheets.
