It only ever existed as a way to hurt and dehumanize people. And once I realized that, it made a lot more sense why it couldn’t be reclaimed in the same way. There was nothing underneath the hatred to pull from, no alternate meaning to rebuild. It was just violence, straight through.

Those other words had neutral or flexible meanings at different points, so communities could reshape them into something empowering. But the f-slur was never an identity term, it was created purely as an attack.

I’ve been looking into the history of the f-slur lately, and I learned something that really helped me understand why it was never reclaimed the way #gay or #queer were.
