Belmont was a great place for civic leisure and nature's rhythms because of its wide-open spaces and wooded groves. This moment, set against the backdrop of early autumn, demonstrates how people and nature are connected and how joy can be found in community.

On October 8, 1870, families and neighbors gathered on the grassy hills of Belmont within the expanded Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. They collect native nuts like chestnuts, hickory, and walnuts to celebrate the season.
