The music is not free. Many pay their subscription to the store of choice in return for thematic playlists that agree with them. The relationship is between listener and vendor. No listener/artist relationship. It is a social and cultural failure.

Text reads "You may recall that my label, Omnempathy, released a recording by Verloren Schatten. Ditto Music , the digital distributor I decided to trial for the first time - quietly, without saying anything to me, determined the recording to be ‘generic instrumental music’ and consequently failed to send the recording to Apple for release on the Apple music store. Frontline support remained unengaged and recycled the same line repeatedly that their agreement with Apple prevented them from submitting generic instrumental music. They remained impervious to my 25 year history of successfully releasing music with a reasonable degree of critical success, and my proposal that I might be better placed to determine if it was 'generic' in any way. I invited them repeatedly to review the release as they had made a judgement on the recording that was not only insulting to the artist, it was plainly wrong. Not only did they fail to do this, they refused my numerous requests to escalate the matter. Subsequent mail to the CEO, the press office and chief operating officer have not been responded to. It seems, therefore, that Ditto failed in their single duty for which they were paid; to distribute the work of the label. They have, however, elected themselves as aesthetic arbiter and artistic critic. The financial consequence of this is crushingly small, of course. who but the few make any money with digital sales? But Apple has further reach than the other platforms, and for this reason it is the point of principle that matters. A distributor takes the decision unilaterally to judge a piece of work and determine for themselves what it is, what it constitutes and whether it deserves to be passed on to the store. They do this without telling the label - who has paid for the service - what they have done."
