Just to add further color, the uptick in 2025 of inflation and the very recent tick down in aggregate wage growth I think is pretty suggestive of the knife’s edge that we’re on right now. Trump’s economic stupidity means every point along the employment curve we eat a bit more inflation.

Fed could certainly raise rates and give guidance that its target is actually 2% and it will do what it takes to hit it. But seems obvious that nobody wants to risk navigating the disemployment that could come with it.

(i'm no less a layperson than you but i do find in questions like this there's a great deal of folks talking past each other bc defns are slippery and jargon-y)

I guess I can't really speak to, like, micro motivations for this stuff, but to me the economy looks plenty anchored to me. Obviously this is backward looking but if there are leading indicators of these proxies for the nominal economy either crashing or skyrocketing, I'm unfamiliar with them.

sorry i mean the connection between "unanchored expectations" and "raising prices". i'm not sure i understand what the former means in this context.

i don't think i follow how the two are connected.

moderation and centrism very much not the same thing. moderate swing voters have idiosyncratic views that net moderate but they’re not coherent. views they tend to hold that agree with ours are ones on healthcare, education, social security, and similar. we are very far apart on most of the rest.
