Demonschool does this... kinda! Our backgrounds ARE full 3D, but for most of the overworld gameplay, we have a fixed camera angle... if there are no moving lights, we can cache the world to a texture and treat the whole world as an impostor, essentially doing runtime 'pre-rendering' i guess.

From 2012 to 2019 I had no legal means by which to watch the original Evangelion series in a way that would benefit its creators and/or distributors. One can only imagine how I maintained my interest in the series until I could watch it anywhere on pretty much anything.
