Note that this is in no way related to my previous post and Will Ramos. Will is cool.

If I had a nickel for every time one of my favorite deathcore vocalists with nasty low extreme vocals got cancelled for sexual assault, I'd have two nickels. Which is certainly not good but somehow, also not surprising in a slightest.

1. The idea to turn a family reunion into a deathcore song is crazy

2. I am happy to see people use extreme metal to express very normal personal human feelings because _it_works_

3. Will is a fascinating guy and a great artist

The result is that art ends up suffering. I once resented movie critics just as fanboys always have. I hated that they got to see movies before I did. I hated when they spoiled plot points before the film had even been released. I hated when they killed the buzz for any movie I was hyped to go see. And, of course, I hated their taste in film. Oh, you werenโ€™t a fan of the latest Batman, Mister Important? Youโ€™d rather milk yourself to some arty, Merchant Ivory snoozefest instead? Fuck off. You donโ€™t even like movies, you asshole. You donโ€™t deserve your job! Movie reviews should be left to the people!

Thus, my cursed wish was granted. Virtually every critic of import has been made redundant in the digital age. Richard Brody, a film critic Iโ€™ve never agreed with, wrote a brilliant piece recently on this very topic. Critics arenโ€™t just random fartsniffers paid handsomely to shit on things you enjoy. The best critics have a deep knowledge of whatever art form they cover. That knowledge, paired with skilled writing, grants those critics an authority that @MisterMarvel609 can never attain. A good review also expands the conversation on a work of art rather than just evaluating it. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™ll read some reviews after Iโ€™ve just watched a flick. A seasoned critic will give me background on that movieโ€™s production, cite its influences, and point out other things I wouldnโ€™t have noticed and/or known without their help.

Up until very recently, I did not realize how much I needed the genderbent Phantom of the Opera. The failed classical musician in me is very literally crying the tears of joy rn.

Also, I need more of this soprano but apparently, Lacey lost her channel due to a copyright strike

Finally got around fighting the Unmatched Power of the Sun and lowkey liked it more than P-1.

I know I am the exact kind of player that is not, like, entertainingly bad, and nowhere near good enough to be worth watching, but whatever.

We got seasonal events, mods, a crackhead tryhard community of speedrunners, memes, custom maps, tinfoil lore theories, homages in music and other games, eeekhhh fanart... cameos, bonus levels, and a full-on visual remaster before the game itself.

I was casually cybergrinding and got jumpscared by a bunnygirl mindflayer. This prompted me to go through the enemy list and pick the ones that look the best with the ears.

I will probably try to read it again and fish out some connections that tie this story together. Genuinely curious what I may have missed.

The voices, the emergency train stop, the literal Chekhov's gun, many more things later. They make the story feel like a believable chain of causes and consequences, while also not bringing the impression that the author is just messing with the viewer.

16.04.2025 14:37 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

SEL is different. It does not have much, if any, dramatic reveals, but it has many details that produce no immediate reaction aside from "I wonder how this eventually becomes relevant", and sure enough, they become relevant several episodes later.

16.04.2025 14:37 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Thinking again on Lain's interesting take on foreshadowing.

This word is often associated with teasing some big subversion of expectations later in a story; this approach runs the risk of feeling contrived, as if to surprise the viewer was the author's entire goal.

16.04.2025 14:37 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

This seems different.

That said, I did like certain aspects of BLAME! a lot. Its visuals are certainly unique. Its take on the future as an entire world of brutalist megastructures is something I haven't seen much before, with the closest being, again, Ergo Proxy and, in a way, Angel's Egg.

16.04.2025 14:05 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

In a way, this reminds me of the initial impression from Ergo Proxy. However, the reason why it has episodes of seemingly far worse writing quality than the rest of the series, in the end comes down to the fact that the show is deeply self-referential with a significant degree of irony to it.

16.04.2025 14:05 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

a single line of dialogue in them, and what little story there is, it explains nothing about the significance of the earlier parts of the manga, which only strengthens the impression of them being a bunch of filler pages thrown in with no rhyme or reason.

I can't say I liked it after all.

I have no clue what to make of this. What started as a cyberpunk story and continued as a messy and poorly written high fantasy quest, ended as a long sequence of surreal images with little, if any, narrative between them. Several pages-long fragments of the last volume don't have
