Pan species lister based in North Essex, exploring all taxa since 2018 - making good progress in some, barely scratching the surface in others. Cranefly Recorder for Essex. Obsessed moth / non-moth trapper.

What an incredible month November has been so far, and thanks to simply shaking some leaves.

Three new leafhoppers for me, two of these possibly new to Essex.

Always nice to get similar moths in the same catch so a comparison photo can be taken. even better when th moths co-operate.

Dark Sword-grass (left) and Turnip (right).

North Essex, last night.

During the current winter chill my go to has been leaf litter. So not surprising I'm exploring springtails. This is often resulting in new species for me to record, such as Isotoma viridis, with its single pair of manubrial teeth.

When They Hear Plants Cry, Moths Make a Decision A new study suggests that the insects rely on the sounds made by distressed vegetation to guide important reproductive choices.

Still so much to learn.

Blown into my greenhouse this evening where my light trap is running, the attractive migrant fly, Stomorhina lunata.

This one is a female (males having orange patches on the abdomen).

Such mesmerising eyes.

Anyone else had a Holly Tortrix (Rhopobota naevana) in December before?

By my garden trap this morning, North Essex.

Like others have noted, last night's promise of migrants failed to materialise. My North Essex garden trap contained a single Mottled Umber. Outside the trap were three LBAMs, a December Moth and an Oak Nycteoline.

Sylvicola fuscatus appears to be well and truly established in my area (North Essex).

Had several this and last year now.

Lindbergina aurovittata, I believe.

Attracted to my actinic lights last night (in a sheltered spot, out of the 50+ mph gusts).

Storm Bert, part 2.
Still no African rarities to my garden trap in North Essex, but this Sprawler was good to see.
8 moths of 4 species was a big improvement on the previous night's 1 of 1. πŸ™‚

Good luck. I've just lit up. Mottled Umber and Sprawler appeared instantly.

Last night it stayed fairly dry in my North Essex garden. Just a shame it was a tad breezy. Avoided a blank, just, with a lone Feathered Thorn.

Just completed a gen det on this moth, one of a pair at my garden moth trap in North Essex, in late June.

Endothenia ustulana, Bugle Marble, a scarce (or under-recorded) inhabitant of damp woodland and waste ground.

Just the one previous record for Essex, in 1905.
