The "Nyarth Robot Stronger No. 1" will show up again 23 years later in the Pocket Monsters (2019) episode "And We're Both Looking Up at the Same Moon!"

I can't quite pinpoint the exact homage here. I'm assuming this one's simply just a bunch of different anime giant robots all mashed together...? 🤷

The Rocket trio has this whole entire other life off-screen and we barely get a glimpse of it 🫠

This episode's made by manually hand painting animation cels, just like every other episode of the series up until this point, but for some reason this one shot during the battle between Hassam and Heracros is digitally colored...?

It stands out from the rest of the episode so, so much.

The show uses Hassam to geek out about the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam series a bit. Hassam's nickname as the "Red Flash" is reminiscent of Char Azanable's nickname the "Red Comet," and a famous Gundam line about Char's Zaku being "three times faster" is emulated in this Pokémon episode as well

You can tell this is an early 2000s episode because words like "data" (データ) and "download" (ダウンロード) appear in its script over and over again. These were the the hot new buzzwords of the time!

Shingo, meanwhile, is played by Chiba Susumu, most well known for playing Seiji Hayami in Cutie Honey F, Fujiwara-no-Sai in Hikaru no Go, and Isao Kondou in Gintama, among others.

He would go on to voice the Four Heavenly Kings member Wataru in Pocket Monsters.

Beautiful episode. Very satisfying to see Honey finally battle Panther Zora after so many years! Also loved all the throwbacks to the original anime’s ending.

I hope the battles from the manga get properly animated someday. 🥲

Fast forward to today, one of my Honey figures in that line got ruined, so I did some plastic surgery to make her Kekko Kamen.

A while back a friend and I bought some Kekko Kamen figures (or “dollgures”) from eBay but their bodies were totally damaged. I kept on to the spare parts just in case.

Today I reconstructed a Kekko Kamen figure. The gloves need a polish but overall pretty good for a last minute project!

Looks like they also used this artwork for one of the jigsaw puzzles.

Musashi's "Evil Female Leader" character seems to be a mash up of a bunch of Super Sentai villains, like Prince Igum from Hikari Sentai Maskman and Queen Hadrian from Denshi Sentai Denziman.

I don't know about you but these images of the Nyarth's head burning up like this are a little upsetting!

My new Opanchu plush came with an ita bag so I went crazy.

Granted, most seasons are pretty self-contained but it felt especially apparent in S and SuperS.

I'm not sure if it's because of Ikuhara taking over or not but it felt like S was trying to move away from a lot of elements from the previous seasons. This is especially obvious when they blatantly refrain from mentioning the Silver Crystal.

Thinking about that time I ran into Asuka in Osaka.
