That's super interesting, thank you for pointing it out! Indeed, such kind of consumption is generally not considered in national accounts based FAO data. However, compared to marked-sourced foods, picking or consumption from own production is extremely low and, thus, in most countries neglectable.

In our latest paper published in Nature Food, we study self-sufficiency patterns around the globe. We find that 1 in 7 countries is self-sufficient in 5 or more of the 7 food groups analyzed.
