It is a real shame. Genuine UX research has been replaced by click-driven design, hence why there are so many anti-patterns. It's also why most media websites are so bad. Newspaper thinking is still driving most of the decision-making IMHO.

I find it hard to understand why Stuff would think that a home page load time of 1.2 seconds is acceptable in this modern age.
For perspective, this is over gig fibre, today. In 2016 an equally large RNZ homepage took 1.2 seconds to load _over_ _dialup_.

#nzpol The Reserve Bank has cut the official cash rate by 0.5%. That sounds great. But banks only cut interest rates that much when the economy is in trouble - and not when things are going well. This cut is a sign of economic weakness, not strength. A ππ§΅

What I'd say to the 65,000 unemployed young people in NZ is... move, and compete harder against the other 340,000 people wanting work or more work. Hell, there are 20,000 job vacancies out there! Nevermind that most of them are wholly unsuited to you. Try harder, bottom-feeders.

Government unveils strategy for the defence industry
The plan will lift New Zealand's defence spending to more than 2 percent in the next eight years with the Defence Minister seeking to have New Zealand develop weapons for export.
So Collins wants New Zealand to become an international arms dealer.
My kiwisaver fund explicitly excludes weapons because they're incompatible with ethical fund management, but here's Judith Collins gleefully announcing our entry into this appalling trade. WT actual F.

In their ruling, released today, the NZMC also took issue with that, writing:
The parents are entitled to express their views about the tragic events and their views on the teenβs gender identity and RNZ is entitled to report them. But their perspective came from a particular point of view and drove the narrative. The fact that the story was brought to RNZ by a group that is regarded as having an anti-trans perspective should have alerted RNZ to the fact that there was a wider agenda at play.
The NZMC concluded:
The Council believes RNZ should have been aware that there was a wider agenda at play and another side of the story that needed to be told, particularly when further information emerged after the publication of the first story. They could have provided a balancing alternative perspective in a number of ways, in the original story or subsequently.
The complaint is upheld for lack of balance and fairness.
as reported in webworm today, the nz media council has ruled against RNZ, saying it lacked balance and fairness in its reporting over the death of trans teen alex. hopefully this encourages RNZ to look at all their reporting on trans issues - they need to (www.webworm.co/trainhopping/)

It might seem obvious that if you value something, you'll make an effort to get better at it.
What's less intuitive is that if you make an effort to get better at something you're not good at, you'll learn its value.
