It is a real shame. Genuine UX research has been replaced by click-driven design, hence why there are so many anti-patterns. It's also why most media websites are so bad. Newspaper thinking is still driving most of the decision-making IMHO.

It must be having an impact on their numbers. I go there much less than I did because life is just too short.

I find it hard to understand why Stuff would think that a home page load time of 1.2 seconds is acceptable in this modern age.

For perspective, this is over gig fibre, today. In 2016 an equally large RNZ homepage took 1.2 seconds to load _over_ _dialup_.

Gosh, well that was a turn in the (back on) track I did not expect. Going from being a nuclear free country that has banned military style guns, to manufacturing weapons for use in wars.
