in studying US history in the US, Wilson's legacy was a hard subject to personally grapple with because in SK, he is seen as a progenitor and the spark which lit Korean independence. but we also know he was a raging racist and eugenicist and 99.99% never gave two shits about the Korean people

I wanted to leave with the following:

1) Samil/March 1 movement was not a spontaneous act of rebellion but a orchestrated movement across Korea, China, Japan, and US
2) Wilson's self-determination is forgotten in the contemporary US but its impact was immense. We should hold it sancrosanct too /fin

The Wilson administration did not react to the March 1 movement or its crackdown after. Korean activists continued to make overtures to persuade for Wilson, the proclaimer of self-determination, to join their side. On June 3, the SF-based Korean National Assc. sent Wilson a copy of the Declaration

Between 800k to 1m are estimated to have joined the protests across the peninsula, thanks to the prior legwork done to share the movement before March 1. Between 700 and 7500 are estimated to have been killed by Japanese authorities, who were caught off-guard and cracked down very hard.

On March 1, at noon, activists gathered to read the Declaration of Independence at a restaurant in Seoul; they were promptly arrested. At 2pm, thousands of activists and civilians gathered at Tapgol Park to declare independence publicly, which sparked the March 1 independence movement

Back in Seoul, activists met secretly between Feb. 25 and 27 to sign the Declaration of Independence and print out 20k+ copies, including those to be sent to President Wilson and the Paris Peace Conference. A day of public protest was set for March 1, the day of Gojong's public funeral procession.

Animated by Gojong's death, young Korean activists in Tokyo selected ten delegates to draft a Declaration of Independence. On Feb. 8, 1919, the declaration was published and was quickly and surreptitiously spread back into the Korean peninsula and to Shanghai.

Matters were complicating back in the East. On Jan. 21, 1919, former Emperor Gojong died suddenly, sparking mass rumors of Japanese poisoning the king to prevent his re-installation. China-based activists did have a plan to bring Gojong to Beijing then have him travel to the Paris Peace Conference

Three Korean delegates, inc. future President Rhee Syngman, were barred from entering the Paris Peace Conference by the US Government. On Feb. 25, 1919, Rhee petitioned for Korean independence to Wilson: to secure and recognize Korea's independence and admit Korea into the League of Nations

In 1918 and early 1919, activists in Korea, US, and China were making moves to secure Korean independence with Wilson's blessings. In Shanghai in 1918, activists submitted a petition of independence to Wilson's special envoy to China. US-based activists planned to attend the Paris Peace Conference

On January 8, 1918, President Woodrow Wilson declared his 14 Points, which included self-determination of all colonized peoples. This had an immense influence on Korean independence activists, first in the U.S. then back in Korea, which culminated in the March 1 independence movement
