I’ve written a piece for the NTS looking at forgeries in the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum made by the prolific Edinburgh forger β€˜Antique Smith’. Smith flooded the late-19thC collectibles market with fakes of major writers, incl. Burns, Byron, Dickens and Scott. πŸ‘‡

The timidity of Labour in government is perplexing. Closer ties to Europe urgently needed, but Lab won’t even do something positive for young people. They govern as if scared of tabloid headlines.

Everyone knows Brexit was a failure and is holding UK back. Time for UK government to call it out

Scottish poet Thomas Pringle, born 5 January 1789, emigrated to the Cape Colony in 1820. As Patrick Lenahan argues, the sonnet became his choice for capturing his experiences and personal crises, and the greater trauma of colonial appropriation and racial oppression. πŸ‘‰ brill.com/display/titl...

Young people’s shrinking attention spans are nothing to worry about. Here’s why | Marion Thain Distractions long predated today’s fast-moving online world. Young people may well be discovering new ways of paying attention, says culture and technology professor Marion Thain

β€œIs it not possible that the 19th-century novel … is becoming for some in the younger generations as much of a slog as the 18th-century novel was for many literature students of the 1990s? Might what we have identified as an attention crisis be in part a shift in priorities?”
