Very hard to find any rational explanation for this.

Otago Peninsula officially declared possum free A biodiversity advocate says possums were recently so rare in the region that roadkill was something the younger generations had never seen.

This is a wonderful thing. The entire community has been working for about 17 years to eradicate possums from the peninsula, and they’ve succeeded.

Substituting Saka: Big games require big decisions, Mikel Arteta made his and was rewarded When it became clear it was not Saka's night in Leverkusen, Arteta had the luxury of bringing on Madueke - and it worked

Big games require big decisions.

Arteta made one, withdrawing a disappointing Saka on the hour mark.

Noni Madueke provided the manager with his reward and "changed the game".

New modelling shows renewable electricity can meet NZ’s future demand – without importing gas New Zealand could meet its electricity needs through renewables and avoid power shortages during dry years by combining battery systems with pumped hydro schemes.

#NZpol From a few days ago: New modelling shows renewable electricity can meet NZ’s future demand – without importing gas

- doubts the logic of “imposing a levy on electricity to fund an LNG terminal”, “because New Zealand also has a goal to achieve 100% renewable electricity generation by 2030,”

Price of Crude Oil WTI (USD/Bbl) over a five-year period, spanning from 2021 to early 2026. The chart shows a significant price peak in 2022 reaching over $120, followed by a general downward trend with various fluctuations, eventually hitting a low near $55 in late 2025 before a sharp vertical spike to the current price of 90.900. This recent surge represents an increase of +23.880 (+35.63%), highlighted in green text above the blue line graph.

The real insanity isn’t how much oil prices have spiked, it’s that we’re still burning oil for energy.

Government considering scrapping entire clean car standard An EV advocate says if the proposal goes ahead, Kiwis will be sold "the high-emitting leftovers" that manufacturers can no longer sell in Australia.

In Australia cars averaged 114 gCO2/km (target 144g).
Light commercials 199g (target 214g).

In NZ: cars 138g (target 113g),
light commercials 219g (target 223g, old target 155g).

Standards work. Yet NZ Govt is asking the car industry if it wants to scrap them.

The LNG terminal is a subsidy to industrial gas users (funded by electricity consumers) to delay the transition away from gas. It won't reduce domestic electricity prices, and they'll go up when LNG prices spike, as they are now. It's solving a problem for industrial gas users, not for consumers.

Facing Backlash, OpenAI Amends Pentagon Deal to Add More Anti-Surveillance Verbiage When Katy Perry sides with your competitor, something's got to be done.

I think a non-trivial number of people will have dropped OpenAI / ChatGPT in favour of Claude in the last few days. Enabling mass domestic surveillance and automated US military kill chains isn't a win for the OpenAI brand.
