Graphic showing all the many costs of suburban brawl, explaining how many costs are hidden and indirect costs, and sharing stats and data. Prepared by the Sustainable Prosperity Institute.

Suburban Sprawl may seem cheap, but even the costs we CAN count are far too high, and we ALL pay them.

"We used an AI to do this" is increasingly a way of saying, "We didn't want to do this in the first place and we don't care if it's done well."

So it is on this day
six years later
that all of us

Who gets to enjoy our winter city? Calgary’s hostility towards pedestrians is well known, but in the winter, snow and ice make a bad situation worse

Given the current state of the world, i felt a bit silly writing about windrows, but then i overheard the ladies at the pool discuss this very subject, so here you go:

Calgary is a city hostile towards pedestrians, especially in winter, but it doesn’t have to be this way.

Same. We have a knitting group in Calgary call Les Tricoteuses (à la Madame Defarge). I've been rage knitting so much that I've developed tennis elbow.

I was born in an Iranian prison. My parents were held in their jails. My uncles lie in their mass graves.
Nothing you can tell me about the crimes of the Iranian regime that I haven't lived in blood and bone.
That doesn't mean I want my people bombed, maimed, killed, their homes in ruins.
If your vision of liberation comes only through the destruction of innocent lives, then it's not freedom you're after.
Sahar Delijani, Iranian author

I am pro Iranian people. I stand with them against their own government’s repression AND against the imperial violence in the form of bombs dropped from the sky from Israel & the US who have already killed hundreds.

I support neither imperialism or dictatorship.

Sahar Delijani said it best:

(Mis)Anthropic have decided to overtly support genocide. If there are survivors of this new era, all traces of these corporations, governments, and their death machines, must be utterly obliterated. And anyone who was part of these murderous organizations must be held to account.

Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says — Streetsblog USA Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikes and people in cars and on foot, a new study of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.

Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.

ALL ROAD USERS.

What about painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all.

For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them.

The Poetics of Malcolm X On the poetry that influenced the Civil Rights trailblazer and the art he inspired.

Malcolm X: “I’m a real bug for poetry.”

Elham Shirin traces the poets who shaped him—from prison reading and “Music” to the lyric power of his speeches—and the art his words set in motion across Black radical tradition and global solidarity.

Something I think about a lot: One of the reasons people used to think boys “outgrew” ADHD is because in adulthood men tend to offload their executive function (managing calendars, remembering birthdays, cleaning, grocery shopping) to wives and secretaries so it masked their symptoms.

One wording quibble: the mega/rich don’t “make” (or “earn”) money—they “take” (and hoard) money/wealth.

What smarter investment could Albertans make that to educate the children who live here? Why would we want to grow a permanent underclass of illiterate, innumerate youth? Our economy needs educated workers - not children cut off from hope.

I had an English teacher in high school who loathed the word “interesting” and would go on extensive rants as to why. It really is an empty word that fails to communicate anything of value.

And, of course, the extensive work done by generations of feminists and queer folk in challenging the patriarchal and other oppressive structures & ideologies that define, impose, and benefit from “traditional monogamy”.

We, as societies & cultures, would do well to reconsider how we define, structure, constrain, and support, intimate relationships.

I am encouraged by the work being done by those exploring aromantic & asexual identities in relationships, and those exploring consensual, non-hierarchical, polyamory.

If monogamous pair-bonding were innate for humans, we wouldn’t have had to build up all sorts of social constraints and rules to enforce it.

(This is not to excuse or condone adultery and other forms of non-consensual non-monogomy. Nor to endorse detachment of physical from emotional intimacy.)
