Brant (Branta bernicla), a small coastal goose, about the size of seagull (one of which is included for comparison). I've only seen these once, a flock of about 20 on the Edmonds Waterfront, and they took off about 15 minutes after I got there. (from April)

The Sora, or Carolina Rail, forages for food in shallow wetlands, and is about the size of a robin. Rails are slender, to walk through marsh grasses - origin of the phrase "thin as a rail".

Northern pintail ducks, female or non-breeding. They are dabbing ducks, meaning that they will plunge their heads into the water, butts in the air, to forage for food below the surface.

Juanita Bay Park, Kirkland. One of three "lifers" I saw that day.

Reorganized my space museum today. This shelf commemorates the American moon landing and the programs that led to it. Mercury-Redstone, Mercury-Atlas, Gemini, Apollo, and Artemis. And under the glass dome, a fragment of the moon itself.

Sister-wives? Red-winged blackbirds are polygynous - several females will share the territory of, and mate with, one male. These three stayed close together as they flew from one location to the next. The male stayed at the top of his usual tree, watching over us all. #bird #birds #blackbirds

Smith Island in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the destination of the @pugetsoundexpress puffin cruise. The lighthouse here, built in 1858, was abandoned in the 1950s due to erosion of the bluff, and crumbled into the sea in 1998.

"Wham, bam, thank you, ma'am." Sid and Nancy, the resident ospreys in the cell tower next to my condo building, caught in the act. The whole process took about twelve seconds. Sid then flew off in the direction of the river, probably thinking of his next meal.

Same here. First with reading, around 5th grade, then math a year or so later. Self-study at a cafeteria table alongside one other advanced student. In high school, they let me do the same with Latin, though I had to remain in the room.
