✊ Contre le trumpisme, la solidarité maintenant
Comment penser la solidarité face au trumpisme ? Quelles questions stratégiques pour la gauche étatsunienne ? Comment cultiver la lutte et l’espoir, malgré tout ?

Recently revisited my 2023 @bostonreview.bsky.social essay on solidarity and social endurance with @clementpetitj.bsky.social . We talked about the major strategic debates on the US left today, despair and hyperpolitics, and…yoga! Thanks to Clément for the conversation and translation. 🙏🏼

Really appreciated this chance to think about hope and despair with the amazing Jess Feldman!
This win will only matter if the tenant movement is able to make it real. One thing we’ve learned though this process is that tenants can’t rely on state agencies or the courts to enforce legislative wins; they can only rely on their own organized power.
Some good news: the highest court in New York has ruled to uphold the 15% rent reduction that the Kingston Rent Guidelines Board passed in 2022! This win reflects the tireless organizing of Kingston tenants against skyrocketing rents and mass displacement.

I know my students don't love that I always assign group projects but right now, this is why I always assign group projects. Because we are in a group project. All day, every day. How else are you going to practice the skills you need for this?
The Overton Window has shifted all the way to ban all non-white people from coming to America. It was never about illegal immigration.
So excited for this book by the brillliant @annajurkevics.bsky.social !
To make change, movements need to build endurance—the capacity to keep people showing up despite their differences.

This is one of the most important topics I’ve written about recently. I really hope that more people understand how 287(g) could change the entire enforcement landscape. This could be an epochal shift.

In March, Sandra Harding died. With colleagues from (then) Women's Studies at Utrecht University, where Harding's work was pivotal in PhD training & where I had the pleasure to organize a PhD workshop, together with María Puig de Bellacasa, with Sandra, we wrote this piece. Honoring the pioneers.
alright here's a Take: checks and balances (and federalism) were supposed to protect against tyranny. But instead they just prevented a "tyranny of the majority" from doing universal health care and gun control, and it turns out they do basically nothing to stop an autocrat

Oh my god
The argument is that the words “genocide,” “settler colonialism,” and “apartheid” in conjunction with “Palestine” are intrinsically antisemitic. This argument is itself antisemitic. The Jewish people are not committing a genocide. Israel, with the backing of the United States, is.

"It is to scream to the world that you could find no alternative, and in that respect it is a challenge to the rest of us to prove with our own freedom that there are other ways to meaningfully resist a society whose cruelty has become intolerable."
Great to know that Democrats’ total spinelessness in this moment is actually part of a brilliant strategy. Meanwhile Bernie continues his solo tour.

Today marks the anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066. EO 9066 was signed on February 19, 1942, to mandate the relocation and internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.
