A common procedure with large strike packages is to have multiple tankers stacked in the same refueling area, separated by altitude (think holding). If one was at the wrong altitude, it could have set up a collision.
KC135’s don’t refuel each other. More likely this was two tankers in a common refueling area which were not properly deconflicted by altitude.
Very, very few KC-135's are receiver-capable (can be refueled by another tanker). This points to an accident either 1) while both aircraft were flying formation or 2) two tankers on separate missions which were not properly deconflicted.
KC-135's do not have ejection seats, and crews typically don't wear parachutes. Bailing out is only possible with time and a relatively stable aircraft (e.g., fuel exhaustion at a moderately high altitude). Any loss of control accident would likely be fatal.
I suspect the good general will be forced into retirement soon (if not court marshalled).
I'm going to post a notice in the local paper that says "I will be helping myself to the contents of everyone's house and wallet unless you specifically opt out of this feature in writing." That should work!

Once upon a time, a certain airline had a preference for Navy pilots - particularly from tactical aircraft. When you understand that at the time women were prohibited from flying these aircraft, you understand one of the primary roots of systemic discrimination.
I don't think people realize how much airline pilot hiring at the majors used to rely on belonging to the right group or knowing someone on the inside who could help advance your application.
Diversity initiatives, properly executed, simply attempt to expand the search into underrepresented populations and not lower any standards. The "old boys' club" network that dominated airline hiring in years past did the exact opposite.
I have flown with many, many pilots over my 40+ career in the military and airlines. The vast majority of them have been excellent. Without fail, the ones who I felt were marginal performers were white and male. Many of this subset displayed an undeserved air of entitlement.

Commercial pilot here. I have literally not seen anything like this in my 40+ year career. Yes, sometimes the FAA declares a "no fly" area, but the reasons are usually disclosed (or obvious). Provisions are generally made for scheduled commercial flights. Hopefully a clarification is forthcoming.
