Nothing like vague-posting to set the mood for the evening! Perhaps more of a personal angle, not everyone cares about characters as much as myself..

Given the critical nature of this post, I'll refrain from sharing the book's title :P. I will name some recent books I've read that handle this well though! TJ Klune's Wolfsong series was great, the Fourth Wing series by R. Yarros was also a good read.

Even the greats are guilty (Looking at you, Herbert). Connect with me on a human level first, and make me care to comprehend and love your world by SLOWLY introducing its various nuances -- and only after getting me fully invested in its inhabitants and fate.

"Chrislee's cart ride to Oberfell took four wrightweins and left his boots soggier than the yitters who delivered him to his fate this Oggsday morning" as the first line of Chapter 2 is frankly a bit much. I shouldn't need the glossary appendix of your book before page 300.

I love world building in a fantasy novel, but this one I'm reading now is frankly a bit much. I'm not a writer, but as a reader -- one word of advice for writers:

Make me care about your characters and their stories first, before shoving history, neologisms, and world maps in my face.
