Land: Talon Gates of Madara

Was initially excited by this card because it was yet another gate but was pleasantly surprised to find a protection/soft removal option on a land at instant speed, making a great choice for a tech land slot

Colorless: Pip-Boy 3000

I love Urza’s Saga. In all seriousness, however, I love modal cards and Pip-Boy is a super modal equipment that will almost always have a useful mode with a creature in play

Multicolored: No More Lies

I wish I could’ve put Psychic Frog or Nadu here but unfortunately this card has taken over my brain and I keep trying to put decks where it doesn’t belong, which means it’s the clear choice for favorite multicolored card

Green: Birthing Ritual

The separated triggers on this made it hit the top of my list. Looking at the top SEVEN of your library and then using an expended creature as fodder to cheat something useful into play? Yes please. All in a 2 mana package. Even if you don’t use the 7 it’s 7 cards looked at.

Red: Flare of Denial

My favorite card this year by a long shot. A free copy spell in red is so incredibly powerful. Counterspell a counterspell. Double your winning play. Whatever you want this card can do it, highly modal, infinitely useful, it takes the cake for COTY for me

Black: Lively Dirge

An entomb stapled to a reanimate is kind of awesome, but mostly I felt that I owed it to this card to put it on here given that I thought it would be Not Good and it turned out that the modality improved it a lot. Super fun card

Blue: Forensic Gadgeteer

Blue had a lot of cool cards this year but I felt remiss not including this absolute house of a card. Hate to talk about EDH let alone casual but this card is a ton of fun in casual EDH artifact decks and is deceptively strong

White: Aven Interruptor

An interesting space for a white counterspell stapled onto a hate piece for things like plot in limited and things like impulse and adventure in constructed

At the airport early so I’m going through my favorite MTG cards for each color +multicolored +colorless +land

Nadu #1 of course but I think there’s some arguments for Tamiyo and Rakdos the Muscle otherwise (I also like the Flubs, Glarb, Imskir, and new Lonis lists but don’t think they’re in the same echelon)

I’ve been playing Tomb of Annihilation with them and there’s definitely some tradeoffs. Playing a martial class feels more interesting and fun, but there’s a lot less customization options for subclasses. Level 3 subclasses has been actually pretty fun for my group. Happy to expand if you would like
