One of the most unexpected observations was that this code appears sporadically across the Archaea, and likely arose multiple independent times in different lineages. & a huge thank you to coauthors, it was a great experience to work w. you & esp. grateful to Jill Banfield @banfieldlab.bsky.social .
We found the first alternative genetic code in archaea. TAG codons are reassigned from stop to pyrrolysine (Pyl) and this is not restricted to a few proteins, rather it is a distinct genetic code.
New paper out: An archaeal genetic code with all TAG codons as pyrrolysine: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
If you are a postdoc working on any topic related to environmental microbiology and are looking for exposure, the Thermal Biology Institute (tbi.montana.edu) has slots open for virtual talks via zoom this fall. Email me if you are interested! Seminars are most Mondays, 3-4 pm Mountain Time.
π₯³π₯³ Our work exploring the core microbiomes of stable cyanobacterial communities is now out in the @isme-microbes.bsky.social Journal!!! Excellent work by @andrejakust.bsky.social and company!

What a missed opportunity... π€ We should have declared an official "Archaeal Week" at Nature Communications! π

NIH funding supporting the HMMER and Infernal software projects has been terminated. NIH states that our work, as well as all other federally funded research at Harvard, is of no benefit to the US.
I am very happy (and anxious) to share with you our most recent work in which we evaluated four of the most popular long-read assemblers,

and tell you just a little bit about it in the following π§΅
Iβm very excited to finally share the results of a passion project that has been on my mind for nearly a decade. You can find the pre-print below, but what follows is the saga of how this project came to be:
calling all western geobiologists, broadly construed! come join us for the third iteration of this great little symposium, by and for early career scientists
We are very happy to announce a free-to-attend #anvio workshop and ECR symposium in Oldenburg to discuss integrated microbial 'omics and learn applications of anvi'o.
More information and application link (application deadline is Jan 10): anvio.org/workshops/20...
Please apply and/or circulate π
Anymore archaea peeps out there keen to be part of the βkingdomβ? #archaeasky
