my Coastie loves to go on about how the USCG makes all their Academy grads learn to use a sextant while the Navy doesn't. I should ask him if that's still the case. πŸ˜‚
They used to spend a long time on the Eagle plotting their location only with a sextant & then compared to actual location later.

I swear they're also worse vacuums than they used to be. I have one Roomba that's about 8 years old, WAY better of a vacuum than the new one my parents gifted us for Christmas. πŸ˜’ The new one drops clumps of Tallie fur all over and can't pick up pine needles very well. Old one has no issues. 🀨

classic Claude, "here it's close enough!"

(I sadly don't have a bluebook floating around here anymore to check, but I wish they would at least make an online checker that you could put a cite in to verify if they won't make their own cite formatter tool πŸ˜’)

Anthropic’s Legal Plug-In Wasn’t Market Entry, It Was Marketing Anthropic’sobjective is not to compete with legal tech startups – quite the contrary, in fact. It’sto become the model layer those startups default to, with a goal of being synonymous...

Interesting perspective on the Anthropic Legal Plug In news that everyone freaked out about last week from Nikki Shaver at @legaltechnologyhub.com (full disclosure: this is where I work) www.legaltechnologyhub.com/contents/ant...

A black-and-white Shetland Sheepdog lies calmly on a light-colored floor in what appears to be a veterinary exam room. The dog wears a blue leash and looks off to the side with a relaxed, slightly curious expression. A desk, computer tower, rolling stool, and small stainless steel trash can are visible in the background.

Sheltie side-eye is very much a thing and boy did I get sheltie side-eye when I took Tallie in for her follow-up appointment today.

She's back on an antibiotic for her paws now though- hopefully, really, really this time this will clear it all up?

1. DHS surges 3,000 officers to Minneapolis without doing anywhere near enough prep first.
2. Hundreds of habeas cases overwhelm local courts.
3. Dozens of DOJ lawyers quit in disgust/anger.
4. The DOJ brings in JAGs to cover.
5. A JAG was just held in contempt and fined $500/day for ICE's failures.

Me in 1L Torts class unable to make the outcomes of cases fit into set of rules you could always apply led to 🀯😭😭😭😭

That squishy-ness is probably also hard for LLMs. I think they'll help a ton for flagging issues, and contract review, but outside software development, things are not so rules bound.

GenAI has different outputs for the same input, yes, but we can verify the output via unit tests, static analysis, and execution. It compiles and passes tests or doesn't. Claude for verifying that Dependabot/Renovate updates are safe: AMAZING. Super accurate.

Law does not work that way.

Software engineer who's been to law school: I rather agree with this. I use Claude constantly for software, but it's "eh" for legal stuff. And I think a lot has to do with my mental meltdown in Torts 1L: there is no compiler for law...
