UNIXy Guy. He/him. Prone to shouting "PUPPY" in public. I frequently (almost every day, in fact) give away Kindle genre books using #KindleBookGiveaway hashtag, and wrote a feed named "Kindle Book Giveaway" -- but remember bsky has hashtags now!

08.10.2025 10:34 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Covid is not over.
People are still dying and becoming disabled every day.
We rushed โback to normalโ for the economy, not because the threat had passed.
When you wear a mask, youโre not only protecting your health, youโre saying you donโt believe anyone is expendable.
Later today, I'll have to call Irish Life Health and figure out how I start paying our private health insurance. I also have to purchase some equipment, and ship some from the US; at least I think I get to deduct at least some of that.
squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I got the contract last night, and signed it. I had a voice chat with my boss here, and told him; I also sent it in an email for documentation purposes.
I'm *extremely* anxious and excited about this. I also have to spend a bunch of money up front.
(Because I have a Stamp 4, and can start my own company. Which is what I'm doing, and I'll be contracting with the Canadians. I'm not getting a pay raise from this, really. I'm a cheap date, what can I say.)
The past few days have been spent negotiating start date.
I enjoyed that, and learned a lot. But... my passion is operating systems, with an emphasis on filesystems and storage. And Klara (the Canadian company) posted on the OpenZFS slack that they were looking for a full-time engineer, and I told them "You know, I can do that now."
08.10.2025 09:44 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I've accepted a job for a Canadian company to do ZFS (and, to a lesser degree, FreeBSD and maybe macOS) stuff. For the past 4+ years, I've been working for an Irish company called Dope Security, writing the macOS network extension they need for their product.

They'll go well with some rice.
I went to get some milk & stuff at SuperValu, and they had some chili-bbq marinated chicken thighs. So I got them, and when I got home put them (badly, sigh) into vacuum-sealed bags, and cooked them sous vide. Two bags, the first one I cooked for about 4 hours, the second for about 8.

I'm not against the idea, but factor in abuse first please.
