[sat upon a pile of corpses 750,000 deep] yes but how does this poll

Maybe that works in the novel but the film felt artificial and stillborn.

Saw Hamnet at the LFF today - thought it was really quite bad. Shakespeare in Love for people who think they’re too good for Shakespeare in Love. Shrinks that truly amazing play to make it somehow a puzzle to be unlocked by supposed / imagined autobiography.

β€œI’ve had my run-ins with Mumsnet but it remains a great way to meet women with a grievance”. In tears at How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge).

I agree with every word Zelda Williams says. And this at the end from OpenAI makes me want to go full Ned Ludd. Creators can’t have a blanket opt-out on copyright infringement of their work and have to fill out a form appealing to OpenAI’s mercy every time? Fuck off into the sun

Home Office

The right to protest must be protected.
But repeated large protests are leaving communities feeling unsafe. This cannot continue.
Police will have new powers to instruct organisers to hold events elsewhere or risk arrest - protecting communities and police resources.
POLICE WILL BE GRANTED NEW POWERS
TO RESTRICT REPEAT PROTESTS
WHEN THERE IS A RISK OF SERIOUS PUBLIC DISORDER

The Right to Protest obliterated in the UK.
Protest requires repeated protests to be effective. This continues the state repression of any kind of protest that can actually challenge the state or capital. But what the government forgets is that ending the legal routes opens the illegal routes.

Amidst Violent Immigration Raids, DHS Turns to Big Tech to Silence Dissent | TechPolicy.Press Free Press advocacy director Jenna Ruddock says the Trump administration is targeting anyone monitoring its expanding immigration enforcement operations.

the Trump admin just deported an award-winning journalist known for his reporting on ICE and got Apple to block ICE-spotter apps β€” all while churning out highly-produced social media content from violent ICE raids in Chicago. it’s their media or no media. www.techpolicy.press/amidst-viole...

Literally last week every MAGA idiot around was insisting, loudly, how terrible it was that the Biden admin pressured YouTube to remove COVID misinfo, even as YouTube said it ignored the pressure. Those same folks will either be silent or cheer this on:

He calls Nigel Farage racist and then does literally all the same things but wearing a red tie.

And why call it 'golden ticket'?

Disgraceful language. These people have lost everything. Should they also lose their spouses and children?

A reminder that last year 4,671 family reunion visas were granted.

4,671.

Does anyone think this number is a major problem for the UK economy and society?

Finally saw One Battle After Another - nervously as Vineland probably my most read / favourite novel of the last forty years. Shouldn’t have worried - what a ridiculously hilarious, poignant and thrilling movie about choosing love and community over those who only value blood and purity.

kind of envious at what you have in store - it gets so good so quickly. I think by S1 E5 Colllege it’s an all-timer, and by the end it’s just the GOAT.

Klein: β€œI want these results regardless of tactics”
Coates: β€œI will do good things regardless of results.” Reminded of C Hedges’ quote β€œI don’t fight fascists cuz I will win. I fight them because they r fascists.” BUT: more ppl who act accordingly, better shape we wind up in. So, not fatalistic!

One Battle After Another and Sinners both lay out a formula for cinema success: diverse movies where white nationalists get duffed in the most graphic way possible shot and presented in increasingly baroque high resolution formats.

"How many traitors are in Farage's new party?" would, I suggest be a better line than Digital ID.

To beat Reform, make wavering voters ashamed to back them.

Starmer & McSweeny accepting and legitimising Reform rhetoric is the most dismal, morally-bankrupt and politically counter-productive act of a supposed left government since Blair sent us into Iraq. It’s multiple vectors of awful and it’s going to end in disaster unless the party wakes up.

I would genuinely like to know who the hell in the No.10 comms team thinks:

1) that a comms strategy from 1995 was the way to do the big 'unite the country' message

2) that leading it with 'our opponents were right' was a good plan

At least its in the Telegraph so no one will see it

Enjoying Task but quite surprised to hear the unmistakable tones of Linda Thompson singing β€˜Walking On A Wire’ at the Bikers’ bar. In between slinging fentanyl they like get down to the English folk revival so they can’t be all bad, I guess?!

I feel like a madman pointing this out but the plausible, real world explanation for the marked uptick in work visas after 2019 is quite simply that in the previous year, the UK blew up its entire labour market by getting rid of FOM, on which it was intrinsically and inherently dependent.

It would be good if the only political pushback against Nigel Farage's plans to mass deport hundreds of thousands of our neighbours, friends, family and colleagues didn't just come from a handful of backbench MPs and one regional mayor

Today after a week of hand-wringing and bleakness we gave money to Medicins Sans Frontiers, Medical Aid For Palestine, UNICEF, the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants and Hope Not Hate. If you are lucky enough to afford to, it feels good to be doing something positive, however small.
