Today I learned that tempura originated from Portuguese missionaries in 16th century Japan, who brought their tradition of breading and frying foods with them. The name apparently comes from the Latin phrase “ad tempora cuaresma” (in the time of Lent) because it was popular Lenten food.

I don't either. I commented because considering what's actually in this amicus brief, it's clear the bishops aren't asking for a decision based off of our religious beliefs.

Religious persons can have meaningful and helpful opinions about non-religious topics and can make a case for them without appeal to religious grounds. The amicus brief in question does make religious appeals, but not exclusively. www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/25...
