...well as far as I've played anyway I'm still on the second act.

Maybe the third act will have all enemies deal octuple damage and fill the screen with more projectiles than a Touhou boss on energy drinks.

None of this is really a point against Silksong. It is an excellent game, and what few flaws it does have has nothing to do with damage.

I'm fine with double damage, triple damage, or even instant kills as long as they are telegraphed ahead of time. I would like to know how afraid I should be of the enemy attack before I get hit, thank you very much.

Big enemies sometimes deal double damage and that's a good tell, but it would be nice with some form of visual or auditory clue.

...maybe the game already does this and I haven't noticed, but if so, maybe they should make it more obvious?

I will say though, it would be nice to know what deals double damage to me before I get hit.

I know fire attacks usually deal two masks of damage, and I think that rapid-hit attack some enemies use does as well, but sometimes the only way to tell is to watch your health as you get hit.

Don't get me wrong, the amount of enemies that deal double damage is way higher than in HK, but it's not like every enemy hits for two masks of damage.

And I feel like it's mostly balanced out by Hornet having better and more flexible healing.

I feel like the people who complained about double damage in Silksong were slightly exaggerating.

But honestly, I don't think the fragile flower or courier sidequests are really all that hard, but they're also not very fun. They're just kind of annoying to do.

Also they made the Fragile Flower sidequest but worse, kind of.

On one hand there's the addition of a time limit which should make it harder. On the other hand, Hornet is so agile that most of the obstacles are no problem.

I had way more trouble with the Fragile Flower sidequest in HK.

The shit you have to do in order to get the second weapon upgrade in Silksong is kind of nuts.

And for that matter, what is "escapist slop"? You can probably define almost any game as that if you're cynical enough.

I'm equal to Antz Extreme Racing (IGN) apparently.

...I guess it does add some tension to dying, and it gives me a reason to spend my money but I still find the mechanic more of an annoyance than anything else.

Got through the first act in Silksong.

I'm taking my time, and the game is really good so far. It's pretty hard but also very satisfying to play.

I still dislike the corpse run mechanic though. A weird blemish on an otherwise really well-designed game.

...actually, I don't think I can recall any La-Mulana imitators but I'm not gonna exclude the possibility that they exist.

...and this is part of the fun, but also what makes it annoying. As long as the upgrade isn't too cryptic it's fine.

If you make almost every upgrade in the game a cryptic upgrade then you get a game like La-Mulana, which is a game I love but I'm also very happy it doesn't have many imitators.

...but it can be a bit annoying to trial and error your way into understanding what they do and then connect the dots over where you can actually use your new ability.

For example: It's pretty unclear what playing the harp does and what it unlocks so you kind of just have to try all kinds of stuff.

Normal upgrades like Dash, Double Jump and Wall Climb are fun in that you immediately know how they are useful and how they expand your moveset.

Cryptic upgrades are fun because you have to start thinking about how they interact with the world in ways that are not immediately obvious.

I both love and hate video game upgrades that are cryptic in their function, where it's a bit unclear what they do.

Like: cool, I can now play the harp. Now what does that actually do?

Hollow Knight: Silksong's title screen.

Hornet standing in the Mosshome. At first I thought that rock formation behind Hornet was a huge bug-man but apparently it isn't and a bug is just lying on its "face". ...or maybe I'm wrong and there are giant rock-bug-men appearing later in the game.

Started Silksong.

Right away it feels similar but also different. The increased damage is noticable but it seems to be balanced by better healing.

So far it's not too difficult but I've heard this game gets pretty brutal. Oh well, no need to rush. I'm just gonna take it at my own pace.
