One of the great contests in world affairs is now between the attention span of the US president and the attention spans of those following the news.

15th. Go to the Military Museum as well. I still need to bribe my way into the back rooms of that one. There's rumors of even older stuff than the 14th century material.

But some of that material was almost certainly captured in 1453.

This is everywhere.

Every academic institution I know is held together by some exhausted woman in her early 40's who waits until the old white male professors have finished their vague rants and says, "alright, so concretely can I propose the following next steps..."

She makes half their salary.

Rough sleeping to be decriminalised in England and Wales The government plans to scrap the Vagrancy Act and bring in laws to focus on crimes like organised begging by gangs.

This is a long overdue change to the law in Wales and England. We also need to build the homes, and deliver support services, to tackle homelessness itself www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

This is really good news. The Renters’ Rights Bill will also help make private tenants more secure. I’m in favour of anything that helps us move towards the idea that housing is people’s homes, whether they buy or rent, and away from the idea that property is an investment.

Within the last five years the government was capable of making it illegal to have your girlfriend stay over for a night.

This talk strikes me as being a cover for (a) a lack of ideas about how to wield power (b) poor ministers, and (c) the very existence of trade-offs.

Ever-rising height of car bonnets a ‘clear threat’ to children, report says High-fronted SUVs are more likely to kill and are on the rise in Europe with the UK an extreme example The bonnet height of new cars in the UK and Europe is rising relentlessly, a report has found, bringing a “clear and growing threat to public safety, especially for children”. Higher fronts on cars significantly increase the death rate when pedestrians are struck. The analysis also found that drivers in the tallest cars could not see children as old as nine at all when they were directly in front of the vehicle. Continue reading...

The problem is that quite a lot of people (including parents, as far as the school run tells) when left with the choice of 'Absurd Urban Status Tank' or 'Not Killing Children' actually are happy choosing the former.

Parent Company of the Big 4 Sewing Pattern Brands Sold to a Liquidator - Craft Industry Alliance The legacy sewing pattern brands Simplicity, Butterick, McCalls, and Vogue, commonly referred to as the Big 4, have been sold to a liquidator.

So, apparently, the company that owns the Big 4 sewing pattern companies (and Perler fusible beads among other brands) just sold those assets to a liquidation company. Those are the last printers of tissue paper sewing patterns AFAIK. Kind of crazy.

This Senate proposal advanced by Sen Cruz would cancel new and existing State laws on any aspect of tech use including civil rights, consumer protection, privacy, fraud, safety for kids, accessibility, and more. In short, we’d lose the few laws we have that ensure responsible AI use. #killthebill

If the only question we ask at elections is "am I better off now?" we'll never get a politics that thinks long term; that makes sacrifices for great causes; or that calls some to pay more in solidarity with others.

We're citizens, not customers. The left, of all movts, needs to keep that idea alive

In a democracy, *should* the question we ask ourselves be "Am I better off?"

What about "are other people better off?" "Are the laws fair?" "Are we more secure?" "Are we trashing the planet for the future?"

The left, in particular, should be really wary of transactional framings of democracy. 1/3
