Assumptions about how much somebody has read/seen based on the quality of their work is erroneous and can easily result in problems for newbies when the belief is held by people in authority.

That’s a charitable assumption, and literally not what he said in the screenshot.

He could have said, as a literary professor, “what is your favorite book” or work of fiction, etc.
He was specifically asking about authors and novelists, not about works.

That’s clear in his statement.

Good and bad comes after you’re already the thing.

He says he won’t be a novelist. It’s a unilateral statement.
He didn’t say you’re not going to be a good novelist , he didn’t say you’re not going to be as good as you could be as a novelist. He said you’re not going to be one.

This is why I don’t wanna dive too deep into the statement because there’s so much we don’t know about an anecdote like this. We only know what he’s communicating now out of it. (Which includes not knowing what manga is or invalidating it entirely lol)😂

There was a book I really enjoyed that I remember about shapeshifting dragons, the one about some political assassin ninja in a futuristic society with a plague and stuff

I also don’t tend to rank things based on my favorite, there is just a list of things that I’ve enjoyed and why.

I’ve read a lot of fiction books, if you asked me what my favorite novelist is I could not name an author, that’s just not how my brain works. I’m terrible with names and titles.

It’s not a lack of love it’s literally just that I cannot remember stuff like that.

I think the assumption that devalues the other issues is based in the opinion that this isn’t important.

You’re entitled to your opinion. I see the root cause of a lot of right wing ideology and authoritarianism and control as the same root.

I think exclusion should be taken very seriously, regardless of where it is, and because I see art as an invaluable human, right, which also tends to get denied

My issue is with the overall idea of invalidating and saying people cannot or won’t be what they want to be based on something as simple as not being able to name a novelist on demand when they express interest in being one at 23-24 yrs old

And why I was thinking about it along those lines.

If it makes more sense to you based on what I’m describing, you can replace fascism with authoritarianism or any other better fitting word to a better understand my intent in a way that makes sense to you.

College senior median age is like 23-24. People have plenty of time to figure their shit out and become novelists even if they don't have a favorite one at that age.

Comics are valid art, manga is valid art, within which there's lots of writing. Video games have lots of writing. Shows have lots of writing.
Some video games *contain* novels.

In any case, I'm critiquing the broad idea and exclusionary process of the statement.

I think he misses the impact of this point of view on aspiring people.

Just because the guy who said it is a professor also doesn't mean he's beyond critique for his ideas (comment on manga, fucking lol)

So I critique the idea and this brand of elitism.

I agree with the lady he dunks on, I think he's cynical and sarcastic and I don't think think it's a healthy view on art, I think it's one that holds people back in thinking they aren't worthy to create.

The video has over half a million views and the guy has near 1mill subscribers, so my reason for posting about it was because I don't want the sentiment to be popularized due to my staunch disagreement with it as a standard and the elitist view it spreads (imo)

The bit about Manga is the same place art teachers come from when they tell anime fans they'll 'never be an artist' if they can't draw realism

I'll accept criticism but you're really misrepresenting what I'm saying and making whole new sentences up without bothering to ask me to clarify what you clearly misunderstand.
