Observationally, it seems like genomics will more likely establish that there is continuous spread. For example, we know the Snohomish WA cases are from SC by looking at the transmission dynamics of the cases. 🤷‍♀️

If genomics established that the cases were not from continuous endemic spread within the region, then a case could be made that measles is eliminated in the US but keeps getting imported I believe. The definition of elimination is lack of continuous spread for 12 months.

Or there has been pressure to delay so losing elimination status does not impact the midterms…

WA measles outbreak has health officials concerned over World Cup games Over the course of a month, confirmed measles cases in Snohomish County have more than doubled, leading to growing concerns ahead of the FIFA World Cup games in Seattle this summer.

My home county is seeing increased measles cases, kicked off by traveler from SC outbreak, sustained by unvaccinated residents.

Snohomish is the next county north from King, where the World Cup games will be played.
