Oh yeah. I rollaged some fine merino braids without steaming and severely fluffing first and it's like trying to draft felt. Which I don't mind on a heavier spindle like a large Turkish but on a wheel would drive me bat crap.

I've run into a similar problem, and I apologize if you know this trick already. I recently learned that steaming merino braids and then predrafting them a bit really makes for a better experience when spinning this stuff up on a wheel. I use a steamer, but some use (carefully) a tea kettle's steam.

I think it's because a drop spindle is considerably less expensive to learn on. Unless you find a wheel on FB market place or the like for a steal, you're gonna shell out $100s to see "if" you like it. If you can find local spinners who will let you try their's that would be a good idea.

Was going to suggest similar. I learned on a top whorl drop spindle, but find Turkish more satisfying. Either way I would recommend learning on these first. There's always a tendency in the beginning to draft too much wool for fear of breakage. I still "park and draft" a spindle when I need to.

This is a classic bit for all the wrong reasons now.

Seemed the right colorway for the season. This is my first attempt using both a drum carder for blending and then a dizz to make a roving of that blend. Didn't work as intended but... ooooo rainbow. #yarnspinning #handspinning #spinning 🧶

Having a small kitchen scale has really helped me with this. Making sure each rollag is around 4-6g helps.
