I bet David Attenborough, Bill Bailey and Hamsa Yassim are not in the Epstein files.

But I do wonder why not have the teacher on instead/as well. Why does he and Graham Norton only ever have actors and so called celebrities. Why not have interesting people like teachers, nurses, waiters.. celebrity is overrated and overpaid in my opinion. But what do I know. πŸ˜‚

A rectangle with one diagonal drawn in. A regular hexagon sits on the left below the diagonal, with one side vertical against the side of the rectangle, one sloping side lying along the diagonal, and a vertex touching the base of the rectangle. A second regular hexagon sits above the diagonal on the right so that the design has rotational symmetry. Everything inside the rectangle but outside the hexagons is shaded blue.

Two regular hexagons inside a rectangle. What fraction of the rectangle is shaded?

I found this #geometrypuzzle in my sketchbook - I drew it last June, but I’m pretty sure I never got round to posting it. Better late than never!

I found those who were seen as β€œnaturally good at maths” at school, were really good at remembering stuff they were told. They were often not good at making sense of what they were remembering. That suggests they actually were not β€œnaturally good at maths” but good at something else

Why would it be cheating? It a β€œway of looking” which is what maths is about. Brilliant!

It would be quite ironic if Mandelson was responsible for bringing down a labour PM who wasn’t Jeremy Corbyn

Precisely this.

Errors of judgement happen, but dishonesty is a character trait.

Countries have millions of honest people to choose leaders from. There is no need or reason to rely on people who’ve shown themselves to be dishonest.

Once and out.

You seem to be confused. Building relationships takes place all the time

My short answer. Teacher expertise.

Go back to a previous posts about us having very different world views. I dont even know where to begin with you final questions. They are the sort that cone from a PGCE student. You must know the answer.

But I ( and I suspect you too) don’t consider forgetting a pencil, chatting, walking on the wrong side, etc etc as serious rule-breaking.

I never said that. I tried to posit a way of seeing the world.

Ah the use of language. Back to the other James. So why use such a stupid example. (My comment was irony I think though there is probably a better terminology for the linguistic device I used - and for the one you used - deflection I think.

But β€œresistance” was a perspective, a viewpoint, a way of interpreting. It wasn’t a term used with children:

β€œStop resisting the ideological structure of capitalist education and sit down!” πŸ˜‚

I would have enjoyed teaching you! If one has fewer petty rules one has less petty rule breaking.

So are you telling me in every one of your lessons every one of the 30 children is defiant. James if so you do have issues. For me it was the occasional child. I notice your 5x30 calculation is a common response from those on the conservative authoritarian side of the ideological divide. We differ.

03.02.2026 10:41 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

A lesson might be 1 hour. The β€œimportant work” might take 5 minutes here and there. Often. Responsive. Its also about language. β€œHow can I help you?” That is the principle role of a teacher after all. Too many seem to see children as an unwelcome encumbrance.

03.02.2026 10:21 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

First by never seeing things through a lens of conflict
Second by using my teaching as a way of building positive relationships
Third by using time outside of lessons.

My guess is you and I have somewhat contrasting world views and consequently find it difficult to step into each other’s world.

Teaching is all about politics.
Politics is all about power.

/same side of the ideological divide but I would stress much more the wider viewpoint that when working with children much (most?) of the important work takes place outside of lessons and is about relationships. Teaching for me is about β€œwe” not β€œus v them”.

03.02.2026 09:58 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

For me its more about ones world view or ideology. I would accept that many schools/staff don’t share my progressive libertarian ideology so those new to the job might need β€˜tips’ but once one has used a term mirroring conflict I think you have already lost. I think James and I are probably on the /

I think in my 42 years in education, I never once used the word β€œdefiance”. It doesn’t sit well with me

03.02.2026 09:39 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

What about β€œresponding to resistance”?

In my work with novice teachersI tried to move away from looking through the lens if β€œpupils as conflict” to β€œunderstanding children’s resistance”.

Resistance in a useful concept because it can explain school mobile phone bans and opposition to all-ability
