Grammarly Is Offering ‘Expert’ AI Reviews From Your Favorite Authors—Dead or Alive The tool, offered by the recently-rebranded company Superhuman, gives feedback based on the work of famous dead and living writers—without their permission.

“Instead of producing what looks like a generic critique from a nameless LLM,” Wired reported last week, Expert Review “lists a number of real academics and authors available to weigh in on your text. To be clear: Those people have nothing to do with this process.”🤬

How far back in time can you understand English? An experiment in language change

If you liked this experiment, I published a full piece today in the same vein: a text that gets 100 years older with every section, from a modern blog post to a medieval chronicle.

It's a single story spanning 1000 years of English. See how far you get.

When we started @lingthusiasm.com, we benefitted from grad school funding that let us cover a few startup costs, and we recognize that not everyone has those resources

That's why in 2020, @superlinguo.bsky.social and I started the LingComm Grants, to help up-and-coming linguistics communicators

How I worked as a foreign accent coach Human voice – between sound and identity I have always been fascinated by the human voice. When you speak on the phone with a stranger, it can reveal so much about them. You can often tell whether …

For most second language speakers, their foreign accent is a source of anxiety. Some turn to accent modification training.

In the latest Language-on-the-Move post, Andrea Pešková provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of accent coaching.

What the troubling use of the term ‘ghettos’ reveals about Denmark’s attitude towards immigration Denmark’s ‘parallel societies’: how the Nordic welfare state came to label its housing estates ‘ghettos’.

An interesting article from Prof. Garbi Schmidt traces how the term "ghetto" moved from a bureaucratic label for disadvantaged neighbourhoods to a powerful social category shaping debates about migration, integration & belonging.

Adventures in /Ɂ/ The glottal stop is a speech sound with varying functions. It can occur as a phoneme in its own right, as a marker of prosodic boundaries, as a replacement of oral stops, and as the replacement for le...

What happens when a speech sound is both everywhere and nowhere? @holmit.bsky.social shows that glottal stop /ʔ/ differently affects lexical access in #German and #Maltese, in ways that are counterintuitive to its phonemic status in those languages. doi.org/10.16995/lab... #LabPhon #openaccess

Family of man killed by off-duty ICE agent in LA demands charges: ‘The ache will never go away’ After Renee Good’s killing in Minneapolis, calls grow for accountability in the shooting of Keith Porter Jr on New Year’s Eve

Justice for Keith Porter! #fuckice
