Hah. Maybe. But I have already reviewed for them before, so they didn't need to do this! If all publishers start using this, we'll all start receiving a lot of emails after each publication....

"Thank you for citing an article we published" - I just received an email from Wiley thanking me for citing an article published in one of their journals. That's a first! Is this a new practice? They then explain why their journal is a great fit for my next work. Not quite sure how to feel about it

The govt can afford 3 billion for landlord tax cuts. The *entire Marsden fund* is 78 mil or so. & Soc sciences & humanities were only ever a fraction of that. The govt implicitly saying it can't afford it is not credible.
They just don't want critic & conscience work from academics.

AETHER
ALCHEMY
Step 1:
CO2 is Captured from the Air
Atmospheric collectors pull carbon dioxide air pollution straight out of the sky. As the air is drawn in, the CO2 is captured in a special filter. Our first-of-its-kind diamond alchemization process is set into beautiful motion.
For every 1 carat diamond, we remove 20 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere.
Climate tech is full of grifters making ridiculous claims.
Do yโall remember when this company claimed that they remove 20 tonnes of COโ to make a 1-carat diamond? ๐
1 carat is by definition 0.2 g. 20 tonnes of COโ is 5.45 tonnes of C. Thatโs seven orders of magnitude difference.
Alchemy indeed!

Have other countries developed climate scenarios for their #highered sectors? NZ unis & tertiary providers collaborated on this to see how climate change could impact the sector (including #intled) The scenarios are (very kiwi!): 'Sweet As', 'She'll Be Right', 'Yeah, Nah' & 'Oh Bugger'.

This seems to be for domestic, not international learners? But yes, if the statements about easiness are misleading, universities have to reflect on their agent training & monitoring practices as they are clearly failing to manage their agents....

This question is part of the UK agent training module - the correct answer (to pass the test) is 'true'...Also, a number of other "interesting" claims, such as how affordable UK is, information on the Openplus route etc. So, who should we blame if agents provide inaccurate information? #intled
27.01.2024 21:26 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0
Cheers, what's the best data source to use to explore this for international learners? If learners with C/D grades (somr with limited English) are equally successful, then it is really hard to justify those domestic entrance grade requirements....?
27.01.2024 21:00 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Well, the unis fail either way? They are obliged to make sure that any agents they work with give accurate information to students. So, if this is incorrect, they are not doing their jobs. Would be good if samples of the tests/exams & pass rate data were made public to enhance transparency?
27.01.2024 20:29 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
They may say that, but they also admit "that the exams were so easy that passing was a formality" and the "course was 70 to 80 per cent easier to pass than the normal first year of a degree"....

Australia migration intake set to be halved
Australia wants to halve its net migration figures within two years to overhaul a "broken system". A lot of focus on reducing the number of international students, including a higher IELTS score & a genuine student test. The government also remains open to a cap on student numbers. #intled

Te Pลซkenga to be replaced with 8-10 institutions - minister
The new tertiary education minister says Te Pลซkenga will be replaced with eight to 10 individual institutions, and hopes legislation will be in place within eight months.
#highered reform continues: Te Pลซkenga to be replaced with 8-10 ITPs to remove the "big bloated head office and lots of money being spent on consultants (which have) been writing strategies and preventing the individual institutions from making sensible choices" #nzpol www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

Government confirms its 100-day plan
The new government has confirmed its plan for its first 100 days, with 49 items Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says are "ambitious for New Zealand".
#Nzpol. The new government has decided to disestablish Te Pลซkenga - I guess we'll hear soon how that will look like...return back to 16 independent ITPs or something else? Massive reform (again), if that's what's happening.

Well, National promised tax cuts before Christmas. This is from today (RNZ) "National's tax cuts will continue, but the parties do not promise any further tax cuts beyond 2024". I'm sure they are discussing various cost cutting measures at the moment....

It is stated that there will be no changes before 2025, so I don't think that's the reason if the policy continues normally until then? Or have I misunderstood what that 2025 statement means?

Zero-fee policy: Making tertiary education and training accessible and affordable for all?
...
#nzpol so the new government is going to replace the 1st year Fees Free with a final year Fees Free. Why? If the aim is still to reduce #highered barriers, then the 1st year makes more sense. But what we really need is better student allowances (& loans) so that students can focus on their studies
