A way to connect, how many times must his hands been upon it shining his boots/shoes.I remember my grandad having a similar brush from WW2 & using it up until he sadly had to go into care, I inherited it but sadly it broke many years ago
08.10.2025 14:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0On this day in 1918 my great uncle, Private Edgar Wood, was killed at Villers-Outreaux near Cambrai while fighting with the Welsh Regiment. He was 20 years old. He is buried in the tiny cemetery of Moulin-de-Pierre with 47 others who died that day.

One of the things that first piqued my interest in the FWW was visiting CWGC cemeteries, and specifically, reading the personal inscriptions on the headstones. I havenβt been out to the WF in well over a year now and as I feel the ache of missing it, I wanted to share some old posts on the topic.

Looked around a certain well known book shop and came out with a Belgium railway lamp and chemin der fare watch - photo taken by a convenient WW1 railway sleeper!

I guess they used the Hanoverian white horse on the headstone for an unknown Kingsman as I've definitely seen those & that's possibly why I'm getting confused

The red building seems to have survived the bridge demolition - looking at the date on the wall it was only built the year before!

Grandcourt Level Crossing on the Albert to Arras line today. Note the two buildings by the crossing were rebuilt in 1919 and different design to the originals (see old postcard)

The circumstances of his death illustrates how, as on many occasions, luck and fate can deal an appalling hand
