Plans for 950-bed Cork student accommodation on former Magdalene laundry site put on hold
An Coimisiún Pleanála has received four separate appeals against the recent decision of Cork City Council to grant planning permission for the development.
Plans for a student accommodation facility on the site of a former Magdalene laundry in Cork have been paused following objections, with one objector calling on the council & State to respect “the nationally recognised horrors of the mother & baby home”

'The real work starts now': Long-awaited inquiry into drug that causes birth defects begins
The inquiry will have three strands and invite those impacted by sodium valproate to give oral statements from September.
Great to see that an overdue inquiry has begun into the historic prescribing of sodium valproate, an antiepileptic drug that can lead to congenital conditions if used during pregnancy.

Three out of five breast cancer patients in Republic face financial and mental stress
Ninety per cent of patients in the North and 86% in the Republic suffering mental stress
3 in 5 breast cancer patients in the ROI face financial & mental stress, an all-island study has found.
The study recommends adopting an all-island approach to cancer & looking at financial supports for patients in the Republic.

Rise of 13.6% in new sexual offences, says Courts Service
The number of new sexual offences has increased by 13.6%, according to the Courts Service's annual report for 2024.
The Courts Service annual report shows a 13.6% rise in new sexual offences in 2024, alongside a 6.3% overall increase in criminal matters before the courts. Cases at the Central Criminal Court, remain significantly above pre-pandemic levels at 35%.
