Yes absolutely. And, of course, when I say "Animators" I don't mean just us....every part of production gets dragged into this of course.

We all do! I understand completely, I too want to do this for a living and am willing to be underpaid to get in. It's a deep problem and I'm not sure how we can get out of it

So much of bad practices is driven by how badly we all want to get paid to do this!

Anyway, that's all for now. I just worry and wanted to talk about it. What do you guys think?

The dark side of Japan’s anime industry Anime brings in more than $19 billion a year. Its artists are earning barely enough to survive.

But I worry it doesn't end there. The anime industry also started with passionate people trying to make this medium work on a budget....and the fallout from that was an entire industry built on exploiting passionate artists.

Is indie just a fantastic opportunity for new animators to get a foot in the door? I hope that's it.

I am not faulting anyone. I don't think any of this was done on purpose. Again, it's a perfect storm: it's something we couldn't necessarily have predicted. But I see the road it's going down and I worry.

And it's indie! So of course they don't have the budget...and they are upfront about that! They TELL you "we're indie, this is all we can afford!"

Enter the new animators, who now see an easier way into working in animation. The dream!

And so they crowd-source, raise their funds, do the math....and offer the pay. It can be quite low but I'm seeing a trend lately in around $25/second of completed rough animation.

but they're the exception. Mostly everyone feels like indie is finally an avenue for anyone with a dream and a great premise to make their own show! The dream! But they very quickly run up against the reality that it is HIDEOUSLY expensive to create an animated show.

projects like HelluvaBoss and Lackadaisy have changed the game and are trying to make it work with fair pay and they are accomplishing some pretty amazing results on that front

The problem is now there's so many animators and an industry that is failing them....so of course they turn to indie to find any kind of work. But indie can't pay enough to live on.

There's been a sort of perfect storm in online animation these past few years:
- a new flotilla of young animators, largely self-taught through the online environment: ambitious, creative, looking to find work
- the rise of indie animated projects: ambitious, creative, looking for animators 🧵

Congrats to Far Fetched on their Kickstarter success! It was wild to see how fast the funding goal was hit, and there's still 20 days left for stretch goals!

It's always awesome to see support for indie productions. :D
