In case you want to do something a bit different, here's some other Mathematical things you can do over the Summer:

1) Watch some Mathematical YouTube videos. I'd suggest:
Ayliean - https://www.youtube.com/@Ayliean/videos
Tibees - https://www.youtube.com/@tibees/videos
Ellie Sleightholm - https://www.youtube.com/@EllieSleightholm/videos

2) Do some Mathematical art. Lots of ideas here: https://www.artfulmaths.com/blog

3) Play a Mathematical game. I strongly recommend the Sumaze games (https://www.mei.org.uk/sumaze/) and Euclidea (https://www.euclidea.xyz/)

4) Read a Mathematical book. Some good suggestions here: https://nrich.maths.org/recommended-books

5) Watch a Mathematical film/documentary. I'd suggest: Hidden Figures, The Man Who Knew Infinity, or Fermat's Last Theorem (https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0074rxx/horizon-19951996-fermats-last-theorem),

6) Have a go at some Mathematical puzzles. https://nrich.maths.org/students/secondary

7) Explore Mathigon. There's lots of really cool stuff on there. https://mathigon.org/activities

8) Sign up to Parallel and have a go at some of the Parallelograms puzzles: https://parallel.org.uk/parallelograms?latest=1

9) Create some Desmos art: https://www.desmos.com/art

Today my year 8s looked at primes and we did the sieve of Eratosthenes. And this year I remembered that there is one on Mathsbot so no shading mid lesson!

5 weeks of summer done, 2.5 to go! Might be time to start pondering things for Year 2 - first up, unpack all the boxes in the study so I can get to my desk.... #StillInHolidayMode

but going back to the original question about whether they'd been penalised, as long as it doesn't go off the grid I would suspect that it was fine

I've not marked any stats papers that have had this in it so I hesistate to lean either way but my preference is not go beyond the max/min of the data set and to repeatedly have the conversation about the dangers of extrapolation (as that's always a one marker with my current exam board)

It's human nature to remember the good bits & forget the rest, especially when you will have had such a big impact on your students! I always talk glowingly about my 1st school for what it taught me but the more experience I get the more I appreciate how utterly complex & challenging it really was.

I wouldn't say it's typical of all schools, but it's definitely typical of some.

3-6 months of "just looking" and then when we found one we really liked that jump started the seriously looking each time.
Completing a sale is taking forever now though, no part of the system seems to move fast anymore.

introduced the idea of zero pairs to my classes last week whilst discussing calculating across zero, today when we were adding and subtracting negative numbers using double sided counters they picked it up SO quickly.

Love it when a plan comes together!

I wasn't pleased when the modular system was ditched in England but I do miss the clear and consistent expectation on teachers and students!
I wouldn't go so far as to say that I think it's better, but I do miss it

It is! And so few have shared what they do online that I'm not getting a sense of what is reasonable/achieveable/typical within the system.
Another reason why it reminds me of 2017 πŸ˜†

I'm constantly surprised at how little depth there is in M2 and M6 compared to the Foundation tier in England. Love the addition of binary though!
The modular system vs three exams in May/June of Y12 makes sequencing the curriculum more challenging than I'd like. M2 should be a non calc exam!

Been ruminating on how to properly get to grips with the NI CCEA GCSE Spec and half way through building a revision website for my students as my holiday project I realised that I did the EXACT same thing in 2017 when the KS5 Specs changed in England! πŸ˜†

In #MathsToday, Y13 FM were introduced to their first Further Stats 1 'Wrogn' paper.
They had to identify and correct the error in each answer to get a set of model solutions. I felt it worked nicely as a way to gently introduce FS1 past papers, which we only finished the content for last week.

In #MathsToday with Y8 I used @taylorda01.bsky.social's IDQ's on Expanding Brackets as a Do Now, leading to double brackets...and with Y9 I used a Don Steward task on Simplifying Surds, and ended up talking about Exact Trig, Pythagoras, Hipassus, and the Unit Circle. #EduSky #MathsTeachers
