In order to write a book, you have to write a book.

This is how you become a writer: just pick one of the things that is deeply wrong with you. Make it a character. Now send it on a self-help journey or try to kill it. Now call it a book.

Reminder to tell bluesky about the good things you read. Books, articles, blogs, Greek epigraphs written across your lover's skin, mystical sigils glowing on the walls of a brokedown palace, whatever really. Share good stuff.

Poem

human animals he called them, and having been ape, been dog,
been mongrel, cattled and culled, i knew who was my brother.

this late in empire, late meaning near its end not near its completion,
let my language be clear and dangerous as water.
let my mindโ€™s tongue move sound, be exact
with where venom is intended and where light sought.

animals. he called them animals.

Free Palestine
             said the birds
Free Palestine
             said the fish
Free Palestine
             said the mice
Free Palestine
             said the mountain lions

Iโ€™M GOING BACK TO MINNESOTA WHERE SADNESS MAKES SENSE

By Danez Smith

O California, donโ€™t you know the sun is only a god
if you learn to starve for him? Iโ€™m bored with the ocean
I stood at the lip of it, dressed in down, praying for snow
I know, Iโ€™m strange, too much light makes me nervous
at least in this land where the trees always bear green.
I know something that doesnโ€™t die canโ€™t be beautiful.
Have you ever stood on a frozen lake, California?
The sun above you, the snow & stalled seaโ€”a field of mirror
all demanding to be the sun too, everything around you
is light & itโ€™s gorgeous & if you stay too long it will kill you
& itโ€™s so sad, you know? Youโ€™re the only warm thing for miles
& the only thing that canโ€™t shine.

Today is National Poetry Day so I'm going to again share my favourite contemporary poem, which is I'm Going Back to Minnesota Where Sadness Makes Sense by Danez Smith...
