Rent control gets another look amid a national housing crisis Amid surging rental costs, Zohran Mamdani has introduced the issue of rent control in the New York City mayor's race, prompting a national discussion.

Gonzalo Respighi Grasso, a doctoral candidate in economics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, has made rent control the focus of his research. He cites a 2019 paper that looked at the effects of implementing rent control in San Francisco in 1994.

Most of an Earthquake’s Energy Is Released as Heat, Not Shaking Up to 98 percent of the energy of an earthquake goes into flash heating rocks, not shaking the ground, new research shows. The finding could help yield better earthquake forecasts

One advantage of this work is that it employs a new technique to measure the alignment of magnetic minerals in heated rock, which helps interpret temperature changes, says Heather Savage, an earthquake researcher.
