I’m no Nostradamus but I’m expecting Martin to outpitch his opponent and Chicago to come up with the win.
So this is a wild story but more common than it should be because of lax rules around dark money, experts tell me. Please read it! And if you know anything about Democracy Unmuted, holler at me! www.ms.now/news/kat-abu...
Nothing is more woke than Ron Robinson!
Probably 1987 Topps, but I am not sure it was a set.
Started about love of cards (and baseball, cards are how I learned about baseball). Then if became about value. Then I stopped.
What the A's have done, spend modest amounts of money to keep good, not great young players, is something they could have done in Oakland too. They just decided not to.
I am very jealous of this...
Ah, hadnt thought of that!
Agree.
Side issue, does fergie count?
So the US needs italy to win or Mexico to score 5 runs. So if Italy gets one in here, they would qualify right?
If it gets to 4-0, then Mexico would need 5 to win (and would be done 4 in any case and unlikely to win). Is that right?
One thing adding to this: these aren't strong versions of these teams right now. Liverpool, City, Tottenham, Chelsea have all had stronger versions in the last 5-7 years.
Arsenal and maybe Newcastle are the only ones that might be the best versions of themselves this year.
You have at least one subscriber who has published academic articles on piracy!
One current cutting against this is that 5 of those teams are heading home for the second leg.

I was consulting from 2022-2025, I got laid off (twice) and I am plotting my next move.

Jarrett is right. That last sentence also gets to one of the big problems of the WBC as a contest.
Pretty crazy how important the blockade of a trade route is right now
I think I am looking for pitchers who spent a least a major league season playing a non pitcher position. Or the inverse. Think Shohei 2024. It's hard to match up pitching WAR and hitting WAR over a career in that instance since there is no pitcher WAR for that year.
The reason I ask is that I am trying to use R for my pit her rankings and I am having trouble figuring out how to include those seasons in a player's total. Either Ruth's pitching or Shohei's hitting or whatever. Any nice R hacks would be nice but I could do it with a list of IDs.
Question: is there a way in stathead to get a list of players who were pitchers and hitters at different times in their careers? Thinking Ruth 1914, Shohei 2024, older Smokey Joe Wood?

I seriously thought you were telling me that Storm was Chris's dad there for a bit...
I'm looking for independent baseball writing to support this season. If you write a baseball newsletter, blog, book whatever—or have one to recommend, drop it here (no substack, sorry).
Has anyone noticed that everyone who uses AI less than you is a an out-of-date luddite and everyone who uses it more than you has forgotten how to think for themselves and trusts it too much
144 Yoan Moncada 19.5
154 Maikel Garcia 17.2
156 Jeimar Candelario 16.8
165 Ke'Bryan Hayes 15.3
168 Isaac Paredes 14.9
199 Junior Caminero 10.1
Caminero jumping in at 199 is cool to see otherwise this is a list where you answer 'yeah, he was pretty good' when your kid asks you about that player.
83 Austin Riley 46.3
Ranked Around: Nash, Dandridge, Pendleton
If you asked in in 2020, I wouldn't have expected him on this list. If you asked me in 2023, I would have expcted him higher. Chances are he doesn't move much from here.
73 Eugenio Suarez 50.2
Ranked Around: Williams, Kell, Joseph
He has been as good as a HOFer! A consistent AS level player with a real shot at 400 home runs. Also, I think he can only play for 4 different teams. I don't make the rules.
62 Justin Turner 59.9
Ranked Around: Devers, Lindstrom, Gardner
His career is probably over but man, I don't think anyone saw him coming. From a lost utility man to a key cog in multiple pennant winners. Something to celebrate!
60 Rafael Devers 61.0
Ranked Around: Keltner, Zimmerman, Lindstrom
At this point, I would have expected Devers to be higher but a combo of D struggles and never having that huge 160 wRC+ type season holds him back. Looks like more Pedro Guerrero without the peak right now.
48 Matt Chapman 75.5
Ranked Around: Caminiti, Devlin, Chavez
Chapman seems to be a poster boy for Hall of Very Good, though he has an all-time great glove. There is, however, a reasonable chance that he keeps going and may put top 40 or even my HOF line by the end.
33 Kris Bryant 96.7
Ranked Around: Rosen, Rendon, Groh
Just below my HOF line but close enough that it wouldn't be a travesty if he got in. I would rather remember him for how good he was early in his career (amazing!) than the sad end in Colorado.
29 Alex Bregman 128.2
Ranked Around: Cey, Arenado, Collins
Bregman may pass Arenado? I think it is forgotten how good he was in 2018-9, 160 wRC+ players (much better than Arenado's best) with above average defense. 8 win player. Since then, he has been AS quality as well.
