ARC says they’ll announce DECRA and LIEF outcomes tomorrow (Tuesday 25th Nov).

In recent times these announcements have been around 11am Canberra time. With 2 schemes on the same day, I assume they’ll announce one of them later in the day (probably DECRA first).

A portrait of Einstein and Hawking with a binary black hole in between. It is rather dramatic, and shows cool light-bending effects.

10 years ago, gravitational waves changed astronomy. A new discovery shows there’s more to come First, gravitational waves proved Einstein correct. Now, they’ve confirmed Stephen Hawking was right about black holes.

Ten years ago, we heard the universe rumble for the first time.

That first discovery proved Einstein right.

Now, a new gravitational-wave discovery let's us put Stephen Hawking's laws of black holes to the test

A new gravitational wave event rocked detectors almost 10 years after the first detection. But this time, it was up to four times as loud thanks to a decade of upgrades.

OzGrav Associate Investigator Dr Simon Stevenson explains more in The Conversation:

Scientists detect biggest ever merger of two massive black holes Ripples in space-time from collision recorded by gravitational wave detector forces a rethink of how the objects form Scientists have detected ripples in space-time from the violent collision of two massive black holes that spiralled into one another far beyond the distant edge of the Milky Way. The black holes, each more than 100 times the mass of the sun, began circling each other long ago and finally slammed together to form an even more massive black hole about 10bn light years from Earth. Cosmic mystery deepens as astronomers find object flashing in both radio waves and X-rays - OzGrav Astronomers from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav) and the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), in collaboration with international teams,…

Researchers at ICRAR & OzGrav, together with an international collaboration, have identified ASKAP J1832-0911—a long-period transient that emits 2-minute pulses in both radio and X-ray wavelengths every 44 minutes.
Results published in Nature.

Twinkling star reveals the shocking secrets of turbulent plasma in our cosmic neighbourhood For the first time, astronomers have measured the plasma layers of a shock wave surrounding a pulsar.

A new study led by OzGrav’s Dr Daniel Reardon from Swinburne University used a twinkling pulsar to reveal hidden plasma structures—and for the first time, peer inside a pulsar bow shock.

Changes to ARC grants will make it harder for Australia to combat Trump chaos, researchers warn Plan to cut most standalone positions in favour of shorter fellowships will hurt international recruitment, critics say

Guardian Australia @australia.theguardian.com reporting on the proposed changes to the ARC grants system.

There’s concern that getting rid of standalone fellowships will have lots of unintended consequences, especially for Early-Career Researchers.
