Note I didn’t say it was bad/I specifically said I’m not judging them for it - I don’t think people should stop celebrating art when things are bad. The art feels hollow when none of it is addressed at all, though.

A great analysis about the current situation. Playing games anywhere is ideal, but the miscommunication of "This Is An Xbox" marked change for the status quo. Cloud gaming has been growing and somewhat improving over the last few years. It makes sense for Xbox and other companies to pursue this path

Yes, this is correct! They are going for this buzzword idea to manipulate stock. They are NOT trying to forcibly sunset Xbox.

I’m not sure why you’re being so aggressive about this? I’m not ‘taking them at their word’, I’m taking them at every single financial move they’ve made over the last 5 years. Their business plans are extremely transparent. They want everyone to use AI, and want to be the forefront of it for gaming.

Clearly Microsoft does not agree with that, hence hiring an AI CEO to figure out how to implement it most effectively. It’s MS using the same ‘Trojan horse’ strategy they’ve used before - they want their AI on as many devices as possible, and Xbox is one of those.

You don’t put someone with two years of AI experience in charge of a game company unless your goal is to figure out how to make that company more profitable by way of AI integration. Absolutely 0 reason to hire the head of CoreAI if you’re ’cutting it up for parts’.

This change at Xbox didn’t happen because Xbox is dead, or failing, or because it’s ‘losing’ to PlayStation and Nintendo. I also don’t believe Asha Sharma was hired to ‘sunset’ the brand in any way (that one doesn’t make any sense to me at all!).

Definitely agree with this long-term.

Yeah I don’t think there’s any world in which they actually abandon the cloud. They’re a huge part of the problem regarding hardware shortages considering the billions they’ve poured into AI/data centers. They’d absolutely prefer we all stream games than that we buy a new Xbox.

Fwiw I don’t believe *anything* new CEO is saying to be true. She’s there to transition Xbox into streaming/cloud and AI.

I actually don’t think we’ve seen how it panned out. The ‘This is an Xbox’ campaign was about shifting how people perceived the Xbox as a means to infiltrate broader markets. They never expected overnight results for it.
