Reform of ECHR vital to allow Britain to deport more foreign criminals Ripping up the convention would be disastrous for the European effort against Russia. Instead, we must lead the change

International human rights laws, and the ECHR, will be subject to change over the coming years. The question now is: who will lead this change?

My article for @thetimes.com, with @dantomlinson.bsky.social, on the need for progressives to shape reform of the ECHR.πŸ‘‡

The Tories can’t have it both ways.

Do they support investment in our NHS, and the difficult decisions made to pay for it?

Or are they happy with growing waiting lists, crumbling hospitals and more ill-health?

Until they answer that, they are not remotely serious.

The Chancellor changed Tory fiscal rules last autumn so we could properly invest in Britain’s security and prosperity. This was the change the country needed - and voted for.

A very welcome statement yesterday by the Chancellor using these new tools for the country’s priorities. πŸŒΉπŸ‘‡

Thank you to @jakerichardsmp.bsky.social who sits on the Home Affairs Select Committee for raising the vital issue of refugee children being wrongly placed in adult asylum hotels. Many refugee children we and @helenbamber.bsky.social. @humansforrights.bsky.social work with are wrongly judged adult.

Brexit voters can see the need for deals with the EU Vital issues such as mass migration, war in Europe and small boats crossings can only be handled through co-operating with our partners on the continent

"There is political risk in striking a deal with the EU but there is more risk in not doing so. The Labour government requires economic growth, increased defence security and control of illegal migration. A deal with the EU can help." - Red wall MP @jakerichardsmp.bsky.social

Labour is the Party of working people - and we must always support people to work if they can, whilst ensuring those who cannot live with dignity.

That’s good for the individual, their families, our communities, and wider society.

Darren, you’ve messaged on social media a lot over the last week. I cant respond to all of them. A lot of what you have said is simply not true. I’d ask you to email me (you have my address) and we can find a time to talk properly about the serious issue you raise. Jake

I strongly believe we can safely legislate for choice at end of life.

I’m totally unapologetic about the government’s decision to prioritise defence spending and our country’s security.

Labour is the Party of Atlee and Bevin, central to the creation of NATO and fervent in our support for our armed services.

Looks like not a single one of Reform UK's five MPs made it into the Commons for David Lammy's update on a momentous week for Ukraine.

(Two of them were present for the UQ on electric cars minutes before, but then left the chamber).

The most striking result from yesterday’s German election #btw2025 πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ:

πŸ”Ή 35 years after reunification: The GDR is redrawn on this map.
πŸ”Ή The AfD won 45 out of 48 electoral districts in the East.
πŸ”Ή In some parts of Saxony, they came close to 50%!

Why is this happening? Here’s my take πŸ‘‡

Labour must heed the warnings from the German election Social democrats will lose if they fail to challenge an outdated liberal consensus.

'Radical change must be part of a national story. Communication must be responsive to the modern world. Patriotism – making Britain great again – must be at the heart of this vision.'
