First Ave Spirit Week Student Teacher SWAP!
04.10.2025 05:08 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0There is possibility in Continency.
We need to remember that and not feel hopeless.
We cannot surrender to this moment.
What we do matters.
We have friends from within.

History Matters #285
Declaring your enemies as โenemies from withinโ--
that kind of language is blatantly dangerous, blatantly undemocratic.
Ultimately one of the things at the heart of democracy is dissent, disagreement.
There isnโt only one way to see things. 1/
How a president behaves, shapes a national reputation to an extreme degree.
But it's not the only thing.
The full reputation of a nation is bound up in us, not just the president. ๐บ๏ธ

The honor of a nation is its life. Deliberately to abandon it is to commit an act of political suicide.โ - Hamilton

1/ Ok folks
For those asking, here are the lectures for my course w/David Blight & Beverly Gage that have made it online so far.
They're posted 2 weeks after being given.

Today in my "Age of Hamilton & Jefferson" course we discussed Jefferson's belief that Americans need to be educated because only by understanding their nation & its history can they recognize threats & defend it
An educated public was a tool against tyranny.
Yup.
Thus current attacks on knowledge.

I'll post the link once the discussion gets posted.
My topic today was:
Is This Violence Different?
In some ways, yesโit is.
And history has a lot to say about it.

We live in a time of extreme contingency.
Performative acts of resistance matter.
It does a lot of good.
It is not over.

Displays of resistance matter.
They show that resistance is possible.
It shows you are not alone
They show that there is a We, a big group of people who donโt like whatโs going on.
Those in power can see that there is resistance and other people can see it as well.
It does a lot of good. 1/
Tomorrow morning on my live podcast, โHistory Matters:โ

Weโve seen a lot of push back this week from people in high places.
And it mattersโmore than you might think.

Today I asked my history tadpoles: Did the government help you get here today? Most said no.
Ss shared morning routines-recalling breakfast was a fave! ๐ฅ ๐ง ๐ฅ ๐
Then we and discussed how the govt was involved. Students were surprised to discover govtโs active role in their lives. ๐บ๏ธ
Important. Clear, concise, imperative. Please watch.
